Windows 95 Server-Based Setup

I found a copy of Microsoft Windows 95 Resource Kit at a thrift store last weekend and it had a fascinating chapter: "Server-Based Setup." It turns out Windows 95 had a thin-client-esque mode in which the install could be stored on a Windows server share and clients could boot off just a floppy.

So I of course dove right in, but first needed to figure out the best way to get Windows 95 going on some emulators. The video is about 20 minutes in but I'm going to be out of town this weekend for my wife's birthday, so best case scenario it's miraculously finished on Sunday.

Figured I'd post an update in the meantime!

I guess your theme is IBM Thin Client (if there is any)

I recommend everyone set the mood by watching the Win95 network admin training tapes at the Blue OS Museum while they wait. Traincast #4, 37m30s: "And why do we want to unload real mode drivers? To give us more conventional memory to run our games! Anyway..."

I agree!

Now that sounds interesting, looking forward to it. I think you need an old pentium PC to use for windows client stuff ;)

I haven't ran the tool yet but it must leverage one total copy and then a folder per client with separate settings and configs, because it claims each client only takes up 2mb of server space

clabretro

This is really cool, does this mean one "copy" of windows95 files on the server can be used by multiple clients simultaneously? or each client has its own folder/share of the install?

Mark

Fascinating stuff!
