Patreon Exclusive: Ace Ventura Revisited

Hey everyone! Here's the follow-up to our episode on The Cable Guy. This time, we talk more about Jim Carrey, starting with the documentary Jim & Andy, along with some other Andy Kaufman projects. Then we move on to Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls. We had a very Siskel & Ebert take on those two movies so be sure to let us know in the comments who you're siding with!

Once again, the audio here isn't great but I tried to improve it as best as I can. Thank you again for your support! We hope you enjoy.

So I havent seen this movie in forever and was going to rent it. Apparently, there is the dolphin trainer scene, which has been cut from the versions you can rent. Apparently it was originally cut from the theatrical release, but added in the home rental vhs, then cut again from the dvd re-release. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSMQQe4W0bo&ab_channel=Raremedia

For Walter Hill I’d love to see you guys do 48 Hours, The Warriors, and Streets of Fire. He has lots of just cool action movies but those ones I listed are the ones that I think you guys would find the most to talk about.

Trembling Colors

Concerning my having goaded you into watching Jim and Andy, I was indeed mostly joking based on what Ryan has said about it and Carrey, but I also wanted to hear your thoughts on it and the didn't disappoint. I also suggested you revisit Bowling For Columbine a few times, maybe even with Canadian Bacon. I remember showing it to my then girlfriend, now wife about 15 years ago and gradually realizing it hadn't aged well. I can only imagine how I'd feel about it now that the veil has been torn off.

Lux Anatis

I think I'm about a decade older than you, but I had the exact and I mean exact same thoughts about those thumb movies seeing them in rental stores. Having never seen them, I just naturally placed the in the same category as something like Veggie Tales.

Lux Anatis

The joke wore thin just looking at the posters

Almost Cult Classics

As a fan of Odenkerk's whole thing and a big fan of Kung Pow, the Thumb movies are diminishing returns lol. The joke wears real thin real quick

QuebeckFilms (Listen To Malding At the Midseason)

I wonder what the other scripts were for The Mask around Hollywood around that time before Carrey got involved. That comic was in the vein of Frank Miller/Geoff Darrow/Dark Horse super-duper violent early 90s stuff.

Brent Dragoo

Wow, I wasn't expecting to hear my comment featured in the episode! I am truly honored!

Kyle Reitenauer

Apropos of nothing, you guys should watch The Ringer (2005). Funny but also sweet

Anthony Hoffman

Cuban Pete is the best part of the Mask, I said what I said!!! (Milo the dog is the second best part) My favorite Jim Carrey movie is Earth Girls are Easy 😂 He can be a little too much for me and I like that he’s a wordless himbo lol

Mary and Steve

Re: Oedekerk’s Thumbs stuff They are incredibly stupid but there’s a line in Frankenthumb where the scientist says ‘I’ll name him Pepper” Beat “Because he really spiced up our lives!” And has lived in my head rent-free ever since. Very shallow parodies, almost all jokes you see coming and have heard a million times before.

Mary and Steve

When Nature calls is a lot funnier to me as well. I like the first movie but never loved it like the 2nd one. I also grew up up with Kung Pow so I think some of that humor is what attracted me so much. I remember bothering my parents to rent Thumb Wars and it was not worth it even as a 10 year old lol.

Tyler Mammen

Hey Ryan I do want to hear your thoughts on Carlin's stand up because I also agree it's dated, but personally I don't think he ever was deep, I worked in retail for 4 years of my life and his, "Have a nice day" bit does nothing to me

JokersJuicyAss

The Mask being more sinister is probably because comic is way darker, only the mask wearer gets cartoon logic powers, that big cartoons tommygun me made from a Ballon, in the movie no deaths, in the comic you see them get blended from the bullets

JokersJuicyAss

Lier lier is a cartoon and it hinges upon you loving Jim Carry going 110%

Luke Gordnier

A collaboration? I'm irrationally happy to hear that prospect! FYI, that show started as Joe's singular venture, that's why the theme song is "I'll see you in hell" They started off doing only horror reviews because that was Joe's jam (ironically, Pat hated horror growing up) they kinda lost the plot at some point and review anything, and a lot of op-ed life as well. Either way, as you said, very similar to you guys. I love it!

Jason Patterson

I have been known to say "pretty hot in these rhinos" in situations in which room temperature is undeniable, but never in character.

Lux Anatis

I told Ryan their show feels like listening to us! It's so much fun to listen to. Really thankful you turned me onto them. I'm hopeful that we'll be doing some collaborating in the near future.

Almost Cult Classics

That rhino scene is great. I forgot to touch on it more during our discussion. Great points though!

Almost Cult Classics

Et tu, Chamerski?

Almost Cult Classics

I didn't get too in- depth on my thoughts on Liar Liar during this episode, but I found it a bit grating after awhile because it felt like they let Carrey loose during that movie and no one was reigning him in. His best work benefits from having a good director, solid concept that allows for SOME improv, and a supporting cast that can keep up with him.

Almost Cult Classics

I will definitely be revisiting The Mask for our next catch-up!

Almost Cult Classics

Oof, Ryan. I've never heard you be more wrong about a movie. I love both movies but I still when I sit down to watch a Ace Ventura movie it will always be the second one. And just to be clear, The Mask is the best comic movie ever made. 😉

Wade Wilson

I have a slightly different opinion to most of the folks here, and that is that I love both Ace Venturas, dearly, but I have no patience for the rest of Jim Carrey's career. The Mask is overrated (and oddly more sinister, tonally, than I think was intended), I've never seen Dumb and Dumber, and I can't imagine Bruce Almighty holds up since the last time I saw it when I was nine. Carrey was great on In Living Color (to a point-- Fire Marshall Bill is a character that wears out his welcome fast), but for me, the juice ran out of his film career pretty damn quickly. Definitely looking forward to the Walter Hill talk next episode, as he's become one of my favorite directors. The classics that everyone remembers (The Warriors, 48 Hrs.) deserve the good reputations they have, and he has a ton of great under the radar stuff to check out as well: The Long Riders, Southern Comfort, Extreme Prejudice. After Brewster's Millions, though, his movie that fits the podcast the best is Trespass, where William Sadler and Bill Paxton play treasure hunting firefighters who get tangled up with a street gang run by Ice T and Ice Cube. Written by Zemeckis and Gale, even!

Troy Thomas

Bless you for bringing both shows to the other's attention. This and WSYIH are the only podcasts I sub to their Patreons for, so I can't wait to hear how the two shows are going to collaborate in the future.

Troy Thomas

Something I can definitely consider going forward

Almost Cult Classics

Apologies Joe, but I’m with Ryan on this one - the first Ace is almost a perfect movie and I find the second one absolutely unbearable. I think the Monopoly man bit is the only laugh I got from When Nature Calls.

Heath Chamerski

Being a fan of Carrey when In Living Color was in its prime I recall Carrey in a FOX TV movie called DOING TIME ON MAPLE DRIVE. It was a full on dramatic role where he played an alcoholic. Blew me away at the time in terms of showing his range. Aside from TRUMAN SHOW I don’t think he’s really nailed his big screen dramatic attempts though.

cdpren

Fun fact: director of Celtic pride Tom DeCerchio was supposed to direct the second one before Jim Carry fired him.

Luke Gordnier

“Lettermen can’t be arse to change his glasses” Joe ramoni

Luke Gordnier

Joe not that it really matters and I dont want to cramp your style but would you consider releasing these Patreon episodes at the same time as the main vids? You guys typically sign off with we'll keep the mics rolling so just seems to like like an immediate continuation would help with the flow of the show

Steven Trotter

It seems Ryan and I are kindred spirits in regard to getting reactions out of people. I will admit that I enjoy pushing the boundaries of acceptable behavior when a situation calls for candor or confrontation or both. Amusing myself is more important than getting a laugh just as demonstrating a truth is better than being polite, but perhaps that's just my misanthropy talking. We'd probably hate each other.

Lux Anatis

I rewatched both of these specifically for this episode and begged my wife to watch them with me because I couldn't think of anything sadder than doing it alone. I was 13 in 1994 and loved both of these when they were new, but watching them again for the first time since I find myself in total agreement with Ryan. I was blown away by Jim Carreys physical performance with a newfound appreciation for it because I know more about the work that goes into such a thing. The sequel, which I probably watched even more than the original back then, is so much worse than I remember to the point where, yes, I too feel it's almost unwatchable. The bit with the rhino is good enough to redeem the entire movie, though, and remains one of my favorite things in any movie I've ever seen. They really stopped making character based comedy star vehicles haven't they?

Lux Anatis

I will say this much about the two ACE VENTURAs: The first movie has Ace showing some vulnerability and humanity when he and Courteney Cox are together, but the second one has Ace becoming a full cartoon. And yeah, I guess the trans thing in part 1 doesn't hold up as it did back then, but it's nothing truly malicious, just of its time when THE CRYING GAME was a big deal. Otherwise, they're still hilarious flicks for me. And yes, I too was insanely confused as a kid as to why DeVito wasn't in those TAXI recreation scenes as well in MAN ON THE MOON.

Jesse Shade

I’ll be a Jim carry apologist to a degree in that I honestly think part of the doc is him fucking with the audience with one example being when he tells the story about going to a plan reader and her telling him that he will have three successful films in the same year.

Luke Gordnier

I've been meaning to check it out!

Almost Cult Classics

Hey guys, thank you so much for the shout-out, that was incredibly kind. Pat Walsh is a life-long John Candy fan, and a monster Plaines trains fan. It was good to here that you touched base with those guys. You and We'll see you in hell are 2/3 of my favorite podcasts on earth, so basically all my psycho parasocial dreams are coming true!

Jason Patterson

CAPTAIN WINKY!!!

Anthony Hoffman

Unrelated: Have you guys seen American Primeval? It's the closest on-screen thing I've seen that has elements and tone resembling Blood Meridian. I think it fell short of being great in a few ways, but it makes me wonder if Peter Berg has a Blood Meridian adaptation in him.
