Early Access: Episode 45 - The Cable Guy (1996)

Thank you so much to everyone who provided feedback on that little sample of our fuck-up. You made us realize it wasn't as bad as we were making it out to be. So, without further ado, here's our full episode on The Cable Guy. I normalized the audio and did some minor enhancing and I think it sounds way better than the sample did. Still, it's not perfect but definitely listenable.

On this ep, we discuss Ben Stiller's career at length, including his directorial work (Reality Bites, Zoolander, Tropic Thunder, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty) and some of his early acting roles (Hot Pursuit, Heavyweights, Flirting with Disaster, Zero Effect).

We have a fun Patreon ep on Jim Carrey coming as well that will also have to be enhanced but we'll have it to you soon! Thanks again for all the patience, support, and feedback. We're currently finalizing an arrangement that will allow us to record more content, more frequently that we'll be updating you on soon. Stay tuned!

I like how Joe pretended not to know what an anime waifu was

Louie Caponecchia

Walter Hills first screenplay, "Hickey and Boggs" is a really good, underrated 70s neo-noir crime thriller. It'd be great if you guys checked that one out.

Samuel Moszynski

Right now it’s free on YouTube with ads

Michael Sgambati

Maybe something we'll check out in the future!

Almost Cult Classics

Hi Ryan and Joe would ever consider doing an episode on (The Girl Next Door 2004) ?

Michael Sgambati

I would’ve liked to see what Stiller’s career would be had he kept doing roles like Permanent Midnight. Listening to this reminded me he wanted to do a film of What Makes Sammy Run? with Stahl as co-writer. Would recommend the book it’s based on. It’s surprisingly bitter considering it came out in the 40s and was from a pretty major screenwriter of that era.

The Film Smith

Crossroads I'm a huge fan of, streets of fire is essential walter hill, and supernova would be interesting to check out. That had a crazy production and was recut by coppola

Gavin Fitzgerald

Another great ep, boys! Audio wasn’t much of a problem, good job! While listening I liked to imagine that Ryan was in some kind of underwater movie watching base.

Tristan Horse

Has one of the great lineups of character actors ever assembled. Rip Torn is a lot of fun as Nolte’s cop buddy. Top notch action score by Jerry Goldsmith.

cdpren

Damn! I wonder what I’m thinking of, then. Well, I hope you like it! (Unrelated, but this goes for everyone: skip Lin Manuel Miranda’s The Warriors musical concept album, unless you’re really keen on the idea. I was into it but I think I’m the only one lol.)

Mary and Steve

I’ve never seen it, we’ll definitely cover it!

Ryan Lancello

Have y’all talked about Streets of Fire? I have a vague memory of Ryan talking about Willem Dafoe’s crazy look as Raven and all the famous guys playing the Sorels. Anyway, that’s my vote - Streets of Fire!

Mary and Steve

Extreme Prejudice fucking rules

Ryan Lancello

Walter Hill’s run from the 70s through the 90s is incredible. The two I’d love to see some discussion on are JOHNNY HANDSOME with Mickey Rourke and EXTREME PREJUDICE with Nick Nolte and a terrific Powers Boothe. Someone once called PREJUDICE “THE WILD BUNCH with sunglasses and trucks” and that is an apt description.

cdpren

If you liked John Mahoney in REALITY BITES check out the Stiller SNL short “The Hustle of Money.” It’s up on YouTube. Mahoney is damn funny there.

cdpren

IMO Tropic Thunder’s longest lasting impact is in One Direction’s music video for Best Song Ever. They do an extended bit where the band is arguing with studio executives and Louis is straight-up just Tom Cruise’s character. And Zayn’s in drag!

Mary and Steve

Glad we ended up getting the original discussion, it’s definitely listenable. Thanks for checking out Zero Effect and the mention!

Tyler Mammen

We’ll definitely be watching that one!

Almost Cult Classics

I sent you guys this Walter Hill movie a long time ago "The Driver" he did just before Warriors. It's a really bizarre film with some bizzare acting choices by all three leads, but kinda wins you over in the end. I'd LOVE to hear someone do a deep dive on it, especially considering how much is already out there on movies like The Warriors or 48 Hours.

Thomas Bishop

Thanks for posting guys! There's definitely an improvement on the audio! Great job!

Josh Brine

For Walter Hill: Streets of Fire's opening is the best movies have ever been Last Man Standing is incredibly underrated The Warriors obv 48 Hrs obviously too but I do think Another 48 Hrs is overhated. Not great but fun enough for what it's worth

QuebeckFilms (Listen To Malding At the Midseason)

Great episode guys, the audio is 70% of the way there and that's all that matters. And Joe, that's an amazing story about Paul Feig. The man's way more than that GHOSTBUSTERS remake, and a damn funny actor at that, so I can only imagine he's a real gentleman. And you guys would have plenty to say about The Ben Stiller Show, I laughed my ass off rewatching the DVD constantly and it led to my further love affair with Mr. Show.

Jesse Shade

For Walter Hill movies you should check out The Warriors obviously but also Blazing Star staring Elvis as a Native American it's also like the best movie Elvis was in

JokersJuicyAss

Also recommend Your Friends and Neighbors as one, great mean ass film as well

QuebeckFilms (Listen To Malding At the Midseason)

Zero Effect def should be an episode, adore that movie. The pilot sucks though

QuebeckFilms (Listen To Malding At the Midseason)

I've come to the realization during this episode that I'm always and forever gonna be a Reality Bites over Heavyweights type of guy, and I just need to accept it.

Thomas Bishop

The audio quality is terrible, it sounds like two guys from Philly talking about C tier movies 😂 Thanks for another great episode, you guys are the best!

Jason Patterson

Loved the episode! For the next show, I would love you to check out Walter Hill’s Trespass from 1992, one of his best and a criminally underrated thriller.

Heath Chamerski

For Walter hill, definitely watch the warriors and I recommend picking up the Blu-ray arrow put out two years ago, it looks great.

Luke Gordnier

I think Ben stiller would’ve been better in the Steven role. Broadrick just isn’t good because he doesn’t get angry well and isn’t likable enough.

Luke Gordnier

There’s actually one near Knotts berry farm in Buena Park CA which is probably where they filmed the scene

Luke Gordnier

Thanks for bearing with us everybody, we very much appreciate it. In no form or fashion did I want to re-record this 😅

Ryan Lancello

Funny enough, stiller wanted Keanu reeves for the speed men role and I think after he turned it down he decided to play the role himself
