Next episode updates!

Hey everyone, we're planning to finally record our episode on The Cable Guy towards the end of the week. In addition to that movie, we've each been watching a lot of Ben Stiller's early film work, both as a director and a star. We'll touch on his work in films like Heavyweights, Permanent Midnight, and Reality Bites. I also revisited Tropic Thunder and watched Zoolander for the first (and most likely last) time.

The Patreon show will focus more on Jim Carrey as we'll be revisiting the first two Ace Ventura movies. (Sorry, no Ace Ventura Jr.) I know Ryan is also very eager to finally check out Jim & Andy...

Anyway, drop some more suggestions in the comments of things we might be overlooking and also give us your thoughts on The Cable Guy for us to read out on the show!

Thanks for your continued patience & support!

Hey guys, did you see the stuff about Warner Brothers DVD disc rot? They’ll replace certain discs if affected - might be worth going over your physical media collection(s)

Mary and Steve

Heartfelt & Gross should have been its title

Almost Cult Classics

Entertainment is a fascinating film. While it's hard to summarize how it makes you feel, it def. makes an impact.

Brian Fields

That's not the one I meant, but thanks for the link, I had never seen this before. Comedy Central used to run a special about his entire career, not just the wrestling stuff, so often it seemed I may have watched it every single day of my high school life.

Lux Anatis

Andy, are you goofing on Elvis?

Anthony Hoffman

He should and so should anyone of his generation with the stomach for irony poison. I can't think of anything else that demonstrates the cultural, spiritual dead end the hipster mentality amounts to.

Lux Anatis

I’ve seen that special sooooo many times. 🎶Andy always dreamed of wrestling🎶 Here's a link to the full thing, highly recommend: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kB0hLuDdbD0

Ryan Lancello

I liked The Comedy a lot. Be funny to get Joe to watch it.

Also the only scene I remember from The Cable Guy is the Karaoke scene, after looking it up I can see Jim playing a pretty good Hunter S Thompson https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNc9phYujWY&ab_channel=DigeiFrunza

I always enjoyed it. It just has some tonal swings like The Cable Guy where it gets all serious. Early gags like Stiller unlocking 15 different locks on Zero’s front door worked great.

Zenshift

Man The Simpsons is really dated at some points, that and that Mel Gibson episode being prime examples of this

JokersJuicyAss

It's been ages since I watched The Cable Guy, as my introduction to it was from that Simpsons episode of Homer tearing up the script and crying "RUINED JIM CARREY'S CAREER!!!". Judging by the poster, I thought it was a horror film, as Chip's stare makes him out to be a slasher villain. After watching it, I found it an interesting piece to look back on, as its dark comedy and eccentric nature wouldn't have been what people expected from Carrey during this era. Stiller came out okay, with it being one of his first collaborations with Jack Black (Tropic Thunder and that Heat vision & Jack pilot being another), and he's proving to be quite adaptable over the years; falling back on his directing gigs to stay in the Hollywood system. My memory is fuzzy, but I recall laughing at Chip's phone call with Steven, as that spider is crawling on his face without any reaction from Chip. However, moments like the rude password game leave me confused, as I don't exactly see the awkwardness for what it is. I think the tone is The Cable Guy's biggest enemy, as it wants to be a messed-up dark comedy while being a goofy Jim Carrey vehicle. A Different Man was similar to this, but it pulled it off to stronger reception, with The Cable Guy having mixed results. Also, Broderick being a bad actor as usual.

The One and Rory

Is the cartoon also going to be talked about given I think a couple of episodes is on the DVD

JokersJuicyAss

I heard the guys mention The Ben Stiller Show so I was going to bring up Heat Vision And Jack. No way it would have worked as a series but the pilot is like lightning in a bottle !

Scott Ruisch

The political climate of the past decade may have destroyed his brain, but I still consider him one of the funniest guys alive for the most part even if he is past his prime. The Comedy should have had a lot more attention than it did considering its themes during the time it was released.

Lux Anatis

Or at least that ubiquitous special that used to play seemingly every 6 hours on Comedy Central in the 90s that we just took for granted that is now probably locked in a cut throat bidding war between several streaming services in a Thunderdome deathmatch for its rights.

Lux Anatis

Heidecker is Persona Non Grata in this house

Steven Trotter

I’ve heard Zero Effect talked about with praise, definitely seems almost cult classicy to me

Tyler Mammen

Loved Cable Guy ever since I saw it in theatres back in 1996, but watching it now I can’t help but think it’d be even better if Ben Stiller had also starred in it in the Matthew Broderick role, I don’t think Broderick is very good in this but I still love the movie.

Heath Chamerski

I love the poster for the Cable Guy We’ve been watching a lot of the Birthday Boys lately and I love this dumb sketch with Ben Stiller https://youtu.be/j5TSdk4AA5Y?si=rx5J5UMvKEEj0We1

Mary and Steve

As for suggestions for future episodes, I'm not going to stop asking you to revisit the 90s Halle Berry comedy BAPs. But, with my Oscar fever beginning to break, a double episode on The Comedy and Entertainment, starring Tim Heidecker and Gregg Turkington respectively, would personally make me really happy.

Lux Anatis

"Jim and Andy" really made me look at Carrey differently, for better and worse. It's somehow heartfelt and gross. Excited to hear your opinions on it!

Kyle Reitenauer

Man can’t believe ace ventura jr got overlooked. Was really looking forward to hearing both your thoughts on it

Luke Gordnier

I’ve always liked Cable Guy, so many funny scenes, I never understood the hate it seemed to get.

Nigel Fordham

Re-watching The Cable Guy, I was reminded of a movie I saw back in my days as a Blockbuster Video manager, when I would watch almost quite literally anything and everything, called Enduring Love. It stars Daniel Craig and Rhys Ifans and plays out like a much darker, much more homoerotic re-imagining of it. Have either of you even heard of this? Also, since I think I was asked, I ALMOST did revisit Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind as my choice for family movie night last week, but my daughter vetoed it in favor of my alternate pick, the Beatles jukebox musical Across the Universe. Both are movies I really enjoyed when they were new that I've been afraid to revisit now that I'm older, but I was pleasantly surprised to find this one held up pretty well. A great way, at the very least, to share the music of The Beatles with a musical theater kid.

Lux Anatis

Heat vision and jack was a tv pilot that garnered a cult following. Also i feel like you got to touch on man in the moon a little bit

Gavin Fitzgerald

The Cable Guy rules. One of the few Jack Black performances I enjoy.

Anthony Hoffman

May as well check out “Man on the Moon” since Ryan’s finally watching “Jim and Andy.”

Donald C. Anderson

The winter extravaganza was amazing, just do more of that please. Every episode should end like "Mr Smith goes to Washington "

Jason Patterson

Ben Stiller has come a long way as a director. His work on Severance is some of the best direction I've seen in prestige TV.
