What did you think of The Matador?

It's that time again! Let us know what you thought of this month's movie The Matador and we will read some of your comments out on the show. Feel free to talk about anything that relates to the movie and its stars, especially Pierce Brosnan.

Also, I am going to try to put together more Revisited video pieces. I'd love to use audio from our past Patreon shows in particular so if there's a previous discussion on one of those shows that you feel would be great with a visual element, let me know! Think about movies we've talked about briefly, like when we went through Frank Oz's filmography or discussed the Monty Python movies. I've organized all of our bonus episodes into a collection so they can be found more easily now: https://www.patreon.com/collection/1286622/

You and your mom watched Pierce Brosnan have behind the back sex with a woman in a movie theater before you were in high school.

Just watched it last night, reminded me of The Ref, which you guys also did, in how uneven it all is. A really great, likeable performance out of Pierce, but the annoying 2000s text transitions, lackluster direction, and choppy structure really bring it down. It seemed like the script was only interested in the interaction between to two leads and everything else was just kind of hand waved away in the assumption the audience would just accept it. But, I'm glad I saw it for Brosnan's weird, snake-like, Michael Keaton-esque performance. I'd never seen him like that before.

Did anyone else see The Heist, an '89 HBO film with Brosnan? He has several dozen people wear the same outfit as him, to give him cover during the heist. They use the exact same concept in his remake of the Thomas Crown Affair!

I remember watching it and being sort of confused when I originally watched it as a teen. Now? I enjoy it, but it does feel a little long in parts. I kept expecting more to happen. Brosnan plays the character really well.

No comment on The Matador, but I'd love to hear Ryan's Vin Diesel cap off story to clips from Find Me Guilty, XXX, and Boiler Room.

"You Kill Me" by John Dahl starring Ben Kingsley, Luke Wilson and Philip Baker HalI was actually released 2 years after "The Matador" but still. Saw them both and "The Ice Harvest" and "War Inc." (Both Cusack movies. "War Inc." Is weird btw and definitely an almost cult classics eligible movie) all in theaters. All with my parents. I've put them through a lot including seeing Lynch's impenetrable "Inland Empire" in the theater and several films by the great but underseen director Jeff Lipsky with them in the theater as well. Lipsky's films are wild. You need to see them.

I saw "The Matador" in the theater with my parents. I remember next to nothing about it except that there were many hit man movies around that time that I saw in theaters. There was one with Ben Kingsley. I don't remember what it was called. I think it was directed by John Dahl though iirc.

I watched it when I was quite young, but I remember liking it a lot. It really introduced to Brosnan's range as an actor. Could it be his best performance? It certainly should be remembered over his Bond films, which, apart from Goldeneye, haven't age that well.

My mom and I always went to the movies whenever a new Pierce Brosnan movie came out as we both liked him (for different reasons I guess), I remember being bored watching this, but I was 12/13, so it might be time for a rewatch.

The trailer was better than the film.

Great performances and chemistry between Kinnear and Brosnan will make you forget about the film’s strange pacing as to quote Justin Decloux on letterboxd, it “feels like a first act that drags on forever, then a rushed third act, and then an attempt at a heartwarming finale.” It’s not a bad film by any means but its wonky structure stops it from being great in my opinion and makes the big climax feel anti climatic.
