Early Access: Movie Catch-up - The Bombs of 2024
Added 2024-11-12 19:13:49 +0000 UTC
Hey everyone! Here's the newest movie catch-up. On it, we primarily discuss some of the biggest theatrical bombs of the year, in addition to some unrelated pleasant surprises. Timecodes:
00:00:00 - Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024) Revisited
00:07:30 - The Rule of Jenny Pen (2024)
00:09:49 - No One Died: Wing Bowl Documentary (2024)
00:13:58 - Joker: Folie a Deux (2024)
00:21:33 - Kelly's Heroes (1970)
00:26:47 - Horizon - Chapter 1 (2024)
00:39:44 - Megalopolis (2024)
00:57:09 - Casa Bonita: Mi Amor (2024)
While it's considered a cult film, I would love to see a discussion on Southland Tales. Very similar to Megalopolis so you two will probably hate it but it's worth watching.

Horror movies and Children's movies usually seem pretty fail-proof at the box office, unless you try something really far out there.

Along with Mel, George Lucas and M. Night Shyamalan are two filmmakers who have done well from investing their own money into films. Although with George it was for the Star Wars sequels and prequels so pretty much a sure thing and M Night keeps his budgets small so he has always turned a profit.

Kelly's Heroes is one of my favorite war movies ever, and it's definitely one of those "You couldn't make this outside its era" since it's a cynical take on WW2 that could only be made in the immediate aftermath of Vietnam. World War 2 movies now are all incredibly sappy and corny or overly serious and gorey, see Saving Private Ryan or Hacksaw Ridge. The 1970's saw the peak of WW2 movies, back when you still had the surplus WW2 hardware and manpower to have hundreds of soldiers actually on screen as well as make stories that were highly critical of the war despite it's noble cause. Bridge over Remagen is very similar in both regards. In addition, Kelly's Heroes gets a ton of points for actually bothering making the Tiger tanks look accurate, where even the high budget American films of Patton and Battle of the Bulge couldn't even bother doing.

Hell even the, "They still go to Colosseum to watch gladiators and chariot races." we still do that, Combat Sports such as boxing, MMA, and fencing. and chariot races are any form of motor sport, but in the scene of violence, figure 8 races, and if you're really being a ass, trailer or chain figure 8 races https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrwTCQWKxwQ&ab_channel=MisfitProductions

For 6, if I smoke in my backyard, is that still illegal or legal?

This is a long one, to extrapolate my previous comment. It's formatted as a list of constitutional amendments I will enact when I'm elected President:
1) Two parent households with children will be featured prominently again in commercials, especially for fast food restaurants and children’s cereal. It was much more honest when McDonald’s was presented as a magical wonderland meant to be a once in a while treat as part of a balanced lifestyle than a cool, hip hang-out joint for childless 30-somethings.
2) Superhero movies will be made, in the tradition of Pixar, as movies for older children that parents can also enjoy and not the other way around. Grown adults shouldn’t have to hire a babysitter so they can see The Batman, they should hire a babysitter so they can see movies children shouldn’t be interested in.
3) Children’s movies which feature reality TV stars, rappers and/or rap music will automatically be assigned a rating of PG-13.
4) Trunk of Treat events are BANNED, even those sponsored by churches and schools. Trick or treating will revert back to kid-governed neighborhood expeditions with minimal parental influence.
5) Only as much as 33% of all video games released in a fiscal year will be M-rated, narrative-first, story-driven cinematic imitations. The rest will be gameplay-first and player-driven, designed to challenge developing minds. Citizens aged 25+ caught complaining about this online or otherwise will be sentenced to 24 hours locked inside their nearest library.
6) The outdoor use of marijuana in states in which it’s legal is BANNED. I didn’t know what that smell was until I was in my early 20s. My daughter knew what it was when she was 8.

Shit, Ryan, I grew up in this world made for manchildren, I honestly feel more like an adult than my parents, like Gen X is so fucked man, you ever want to see a 60 year old fatass cry and scream about "The Commies taking our freedom!" because he couldn't get a Electric cart. you laugh but that was my step father, he did that in public and this man doesn't understand shame, he still acts like he's in the right, Gen X are children who never grew up and it's fucking disgusting

I like that Joe has become more cynical over time because of how bad movies are now.

I'm keen to see Megaopolis but the idea of America as the new Roman Empire -- although I don't think it's totally incorrect -- is pretty well-trodden territory at this point.

Honest Trailers said it best when they compared Folie à Deux to Cop Rock. But at least Cop Rock can be enjoyed ironically, with it having better staging and choreography than Folie à Deux.

Middle school teacher here, listening to this while making dinner, and have a LOT to say about Ryan's TOTALLY CORRECT rant on the increasingly child unfriendly world we live in. Maybe I'll get into it later.
