Patreon Exclusive: Gigli (2003)

Oof. This was a tough one. Keeping in theme with our episode on Ishtar, we decided to check out another big flop that ended the career of a great director - Martin Brest. We talk about his career and films leading up to Gigli before we descend into madness.

I’d give The American Friend a go. Very atmospheric

spaceodds1985

The best part of meet joe black was the car crash at the start

Nicholas Salahari

Fucking metronome.

Almost Cult Classics

It’s an amazing score that fits so many moods and tones

Almost Cult Classics

I feel like Meet Joe Black has Snakes on a Plane levels of being able to tell exactly every little thing that is going to happen, just by seeing a 10 word plot description.

Thomas Bishop

It’s shocking how plausible this could’ve been

Almost Cult Classics

"Oh my dick just fell off and it's pissing out puss!" Al Pacino Godfather part 3

JokersJuicyAss

Also for Moonrunners and it relates to that Dodge Charger, the Dukes of Hazzard is the TV show of Moonrunners

JokersJuicyAss

Also Ryan, where you thinking of Big Momma's House, Soulman is about a white guy putting on blackface to get into college for cheap

JokersJuicyAss

Good call on not watching Meet Joe Black. One of the worst movies I've ever seen, and not in a fun or interesting way. Just insanely boring

Tom Goodwin

I believe Will Smith was attached at one point, when the working title was "Gettin' Gigli With It!" This joke is unironically more funny and clever than anything in Gigli.

Thomas Bishop

Me, a huge wit: I didn't feel "giggly" after this movie at all. In fact I felt...Frowny

Tom Goodwin

You know what's funny about the Ferrari Mondial, it's the worst Ferrari, also I'm not a Ferrari guy many because Ferrari is a real asshole company, I won't say I'm a Lambo guy either because I'm not 12, not Porsche because I don't like a overpriced Nazi Beetle, honestly for Europe I only like Jaguar, and I only like the XJS, which I only like because back then they used the General Motors Turbo-Hydramatic 400 so when that V12 shits the bed because it will shit the bed, you can easily swap it with a 454 V8 from a old Tow Truck or Moving Truck. Yes this became off topic real quick but I do not like that old Italian Fascist and their over priced hunks of shit.

JokersJuicyAss

DAMMIT JOE that model was for Ryan so he can shut up during movie catch up

JokersJuicyAss

Joe you're close, Smokey and the Bandit 4 to 7 are cheap straight to TV movies

JokersJuicyAss

Joe Soulman didn't fly back then

JokersJuicyAss

Especially now as Elon is having his Right Wing Meltdown

JokersJuicyAss

I started using Letterboxd a little after Joe mentioned it to catalog my DVDs and such, and because I live in Atlanta they started sending me emails for free tickets to test screenings and premieres for Screen Gems. I don't know if anyone else has seen stuff like this?

Thomas Bishop

Thanks for the shoutout Joe. Hopefully, the stuff plays on your US Blu-ray players (I bought them on UK sites, so the 4k's should work but test Inherent Vice to see if it'll play). In answer to Ryan's question on "why was the film shot in most of the apartment?", that could be explained by the budget. Halle Berry was supposed to play Ricki, but she couldn't because she was filming X-Men 2. So they brought on Jennifer Lopez, who was paid $12 million as well as Ben. The overall production budget is $71 million, so that's 33% of the budget spent on casting these two. Then there were the rewrites and reshoots to tone down the darker elements and make it more romantic to cash in on the Bennifer craze (The original ending had Gigli dead and was changed after negative test screenings). For me, Gigli is a boring film to watch. It's like if someone combined Midnight Run with Chasing Amy with the two tones not gelling, Jennifer and Ben have fuck all chemistry, and a lot of it just consists of staying in the apartment or driving around LA. Really, the dialogue is the only thing that sticks out to me, but not for the reasons the film wants. People mock the "turkey time" line, but that pie monologue Walken delivers, "I'm the bull, you're the cow" line, and "giant toe" speech are what stick out to me in terms of bad dialogue and laughable line reading. I can see why someone would deem this as a "worst film ever" moniker, but again, I've seen far worse comedies than this (Loqueesha being one of them, as it's Soul Man if it were made by someone who doesn't understand basic technicals of film making)

The One and Rory

Bennifer was ev-er-y-where at the time, like, imagine the Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce coverage from last year but lasting nearly 2 years.

Mary and Steve

“Oh here we go now I’m having a stroke” Al Pacino Godfather part 3

Luke Gordnier

Sean Penn honestly reminded me of an Adam Sandler character in that movie but he is definitely better than Bertha because he doesn’t rap.

Luke Gordnier

By the way gigli is the second film in history that has been covered by this podcast and no such thing as a bad movie in the same year with the first being ford fairlane in 2021.

Luke Gordnier

Thelma is my favorite movie of the year honestly

Luke Gordnier

I love that Midnight Run score - I don’t know how often y’all revisit As Seen on TV commercials but a few years back I noticed the Rainbow Art Set ad totally uses the Midnight Run music at around the 40 second mark. https://youtu.be/Gb4Aw3hh9T4?si=fNSSBoj8YdH46FAn (It really tickles me because you always hear Beetlejuice and Nightmare Before Christmas re-used in ads and trailers, not usually this movie’s theme!)

Mary and Steve

Midnight run was the last 4k disc I bought at Best Buy before they got rid of psychical media.

Luke Gordnier

Agree Ryan Film Twitter is cancer to our society.

Luke Gordnier

11 seconds in and I'm already laughing. Never change, Joe.
