Mad Mel

Hey everyone, we’re still in the process of watching some of the movies that we’ll be discussing on the next episode(s) but we should be recording fairly soon!

As mentioned before, for our main episode we’ll be talking about Payback starring Mel Gibson as well as Point Blank, an earlier adaptation of the same story. I also read the novel that both of those movies are based on called The Hunter by Richard Stark.

For the Patreon episode, we decided it would be fun to talk about the three original Mad Max movies (Mad Max, The Road Warrior, Beyond Thunderdome).

We also both saw Furiosa so we’ll be discussing that on Movie Catch-up! We’ll probably end up talking about Fury Road a bit too because of how closely the two of them connect to one another.

Leave a comment with any thoughts you have on any of the movies mentioned above and we’ll try to address a few of them on the show!

Thanks again for your support!

How can you be italian and not own a record player? My father just died in May, and I added many of his records to my collection. I never knew he had two Pat Cooper comedy albums. But most of it was the real dago stuff, like Mario Lanza and The Gaylords.

I just watched Furiosa, and thought it was an excellent movie. Its amazing how these incels and "manosphere" weirdos spaz out about both movies featuring Furiosa.

Louie Caponecchia

So I need to get you two a SoundBurger

JokersJuicyAss

At the moment I do not, I think Joe might?

Fury Road might be my favorite theater going experience ever. I went in lukewarm and not expecting much. I was blown away by the spectacle and absurdness of everything, even for Mad Max standards.

BGarri1933

Not related to this episode but do either of you have a record player??

I’ll check it out, thank you!

Theres a video on youtube of quinton tarantino discussing point blank and all those movies related to that character. Its like 40 minutes long

I love the Parker novels. Just the straightforward simplicity of the story, and how Westlake seems to relish in the brutality of every little detail as he plans his crimes. My university bought the multiplex when I was there, and I was able to see Point Blank in a double bill with Blow Up of all things, and it was a real crowd pleaser. It just oozes style. I saw Payback in the theater also, but I always mixed it up with the Stallone Get Carter remake, if that tells you anything.

I’ll probably watch both for the sake of discussion. Plus, thinking of watching some Aussie films from the Mad Max era I’ve been meaning to check out.

I'm glad you got the vibe I was going for with the Mad Max game rant

Quick question which body did you pick for the Magnum Opus, I picked the Die Rolla that Rolls Royce thing, here's the IGCD page in case you forgot the name and don't know what it's based on https://www.igcd.net/game.php?id=1000010295

JokersJuicyAss

Funny you mention that as I’m replaying the game currently. It’s fun but the lack of variety in bosses, locations, missions, and vehicles really hurts it. Miller has been talking in the press about his dissatisfaction with it lately too.

Another rant for the 2015 Mad Max game, it bothers me how they only have 5 (6 with pre orders) bodies for the Magnum Opus, and none of them are Utes, Wagons, or even a Holden you know like the Australian Car Brand, but nah let's have a Ford Mustang a vehicle they didn't even sell in Australia but also have you force to use that body for a mission. Another reason for my love of the 2003 Midway game Roadkill is the fact there is variety in the vehicles for that game it's not just all Muscle Cars, look at the Mercenary, Sanford, Brady, Shag, Cajones, Juice, or the Bulldog, I would much rather use vehicles like those for the Magnum Opus than another Ford Mustang and hell even the Wild Hunt (The Ford Falcon in game) is not the greatest given how rare that body kit for the V8 Interceptor is in real life

JokersJuicyAss

Okay so I have this rant for a while, I hate how all postapocalypse media post Mad Max 2 just knocks it off, like everything, the BDSM, the Australian Outback location, the power struggle of the big bad other gang. I personally like the first film more because not everyone is going to be in rags or BDSM gear and you can just use a old town for your home not literally in the middle of 120 plus degrees nowhere.

JokersJuicyAss

Yeah me too and I was really surprised to find the director's cut was actually shorter as that's rarely ever the case. Both are quite good, but the director's cut gets rid of some of the less appropriate comedic stuff and completely fixes the originals inappropriate score.

Lux Anatis

Both versions of Payback are quite good and that got me thinking. If you were to release two slightly different versions of the same movie and just randomly assigned one as your true, original vision before the studio suits got a hold of it, how many of us REAL movie fans would just blindly proclaim that one superior despite it's actual content and to what degree?

Lux Anatis

I too just watched the mad max movies. The first one is my favorite, it has a special charm about it. It's also neat how it's a revenge movie on both ends, but unlike other films max wastes no time finding the bad guys and mowing them down. Road warrior is good but fury road did do it better. Thunderdome was disappointing, the first 30 minutes are the best mad max movie until the kids show up. It's still good and it's the best looking one, it's just underwhelming and it shouldve been about max in bardertown trying to escape with his car. Fury road is the best one but there was no reason they couldnt of had mel gibson, it could've been like crystal skull where they acknowledge it and move on. It wouldve made a 5/5 into a 5.5/5. There's another movie im curious to see called the chain reaction, it's almost like a spiritual followup to the original mad max. George miller directs the car chase and mel gibson has a cameo.

Interesting! We’ll probably both watch the theatrical cut but the director’s cut might be worth checking out if time allows.

Almost Cult Classics

When I went to watch Payback, I noticed there was two cuts as apparently the director and producers had a disagreement over the final edit. Decided to buy the directors cut on dvd and enjoyed it a lot. After further research it turns out the narration present in the theatrical cut was edited out which I think definitely helps the pacing of the directors cut.
