I love it. It’s my favorite romantic movie. The downer ending I think is perfect

2024-05-13 23:59:19 +0000 UTCI bought this years ago during an Arrow Video sale on a bargain, knowing nothing about it. Which I think is the best way you could be introduced to this flick, seeing as how it plays a lot with tone. It starts as a romantic comedy, then turns into a thriller, until settling on an end-of-the-world story for its final act. Once that ending comes, talk about a gut punch. And of course, all the character actors sprinkled throughout, with it being a sort of Terminator reunion seeing as the casts from 1 & 2 show up. Then there's Anthony Edwards, who is turning in his career best. He's trying to make it out of this bleak situation, only to deal with stress & anxiety at every turn.

2024-05-13 20:33:52 +0000 UTCBeing the one that suggested it I’m a huge fan! Love the feel all the way through. One of my favorite major tonal shifts in a movie ever. Mare Winningham and Anthony Edwards got married a few years ago which is pretty cool all things considered.

2024-05-13 20:12:02 +0000 UTCI rented it on VHS in the late 80s and I remember the ending genuinely shocking me. A grim ending for sure but I never forgot it.

2024-05-13 18:06:04 +0000 UTCHaha her hair is really strange. I think that may have been intentional though. The character is almost the anti manic pixie dream girl; she's plain, ordinary, and consistent, which is actually pretty unsung an ideal I think

2024-05-13 16:39:58 +0000 UTCGreat premise that doesn't really get off the ground, just like Cherry 2000, but a lot more original. The soundtrack is excellent and the movie has a really vibrant look considering most of it takes place at night. The colors and shadows really pop and even though I watched this thing on Tubi it got me thinking about what a detriment digital grading has been to cinema. The female lead is unusual and essentially Patty Mayonnaise (remember Doug?), a somewhat plain, mild mannered, and inoffensive young woman presented to us through the male lead as a much greater romantic figure than we make of her. There are idiosyncrasies like this peppered throughout that never really draw attention to themselves and I admired it for that. Very Shyamalan, but I suspect it was shooting for Hitchcock.

2024-05-13 16:33:20 +0000 UTCA seriously overlooked suspense flick from the late 80s. But did Mare Winningham cut her own hair for this thing ?

2024-05-13 16:02:20 +0000 UTCHad never heard of it before but really dug it! The mystery was really effective and I was surprised that none of the characters made it out alive at the end.
