Sorry for the delay starting this. I'm knee deep into the renovations of the new studio. Enjoy the first entry on Eavy Contrast - Fuegan. Enjoy the video in glorious 4K!
Please let me know if you appreciate 4k, I would really like to know because it REALLY takes a long time and storage to make them.
As always thanks for your support! In this video you will find how I painted the Raptors Cloak, it was great fun and a very successful experiment about using oils to glaze highlights very easily. on top of that bellow you will find the steps and paints used to paint the res of the model.
First thing I did after finishing the armour was to basecoat all the other details using two colours; Mechanicus Standard Grey for all the black details and Corax White for all the rest.
After that, I used Black Templar for the Black details and for the other details I used:
Dwarf Skin for the flesh
Akhelian Green for the Blue lights
Cygor Brown mixed with Gore Grunta Fur (2:1) for the leather
Bag of Bones and Wicked Purple (1:1) for the Purity Seal
I like to do the darker colours first, so I started with the black. For this I actually found the best colour combo ever: Dark Sea Green, Basalt Grey, London Grey. Easiest black I've ever done just by layering these paints over the contrast.
For the leather highlights I used Steel Legion Drab plus mixing in white. For the Blue I used Temple Guard Blue plus White. For the Purity seal I just used white and white mixed with the Xpress mix. For the flesh I just did the classic Kislev and Cadian with some random red i had in the palette for the nose and lip mixed in.
The metallics ate the final step and I wanted to do a very desaturated version of both but specially the gold. I started with basecoats of Iron Warriors and Old Gold (Model Color). Then for the Steel I did a 1:1 Black Legion and medium and a final highlight of Leadbelcher. For the Gold I did Dark Tone, then highlights mixing in Dark Aluminium (Metal Color) into the Old Gold.
And that's basically it. If you have any more doubts just let me know!
Welcome to the second part of the Iyanden army painting post, in this post I will go trough the details on how I elevated the basic Wraith unit paintjob to a really good standard for character units.
The same steps described here for the Spiritseer where also used for the Wraithlord (Sword, and Metallic details)
The first thing I did was to enhance the yellow resulting from the airbrush, for that I just did a simple highlight using Model Color Lemon Yellow, and in places like the knee i did a final highlight mixing White into the Lemon Yellow.
After that i picked all the details in different colours:
Corax White for the white details, the gems and the leather
Black for the undersuit
Teclis Blue for the blue parts
Decayed Metal (S75) for the bronze parts
Game Color Silver for the blade
The first step I did was to paint the leather by using Muddy Ground from Xpress as a simple layer. On the front of the model, to make the strands stand out more I did a highlight of Baneblade brown targeted towards the centre of the model and the upward facing bits.
The white details, including the mask were shaded doing glazes of Space Grey Xpress, slowly building up the contrast. then I glazed white for the highlights. On the helmet I did a glaze towards the bottom using Model Color Deep Yellow mixed with a bit of Volupus Pink, then I did Lemon Yellow mixed with Deep Yellow at the very bottom.
The undersuit was next and i decided to indulge myself and do the official 'Eavy Metal recipe for Harlequins. You can find it on the 'Eavy Contrast Archive web but for convenience it is:
Stegadon Scale Green
Mix Blue Horror for highlights until pure, i did two stages in between myself
The Blue helmet and shoulder pads, were coated in a mix of Leviadon Blue, Talassar Blue and Xpress medium (2:1:1), then highlighted using Teclis Blue, temple Guard Blue and a mixing white into Temple Guard.
All the metallic bronze parts where shaded with Black, this was a very targeted shade, then Highlights using Runelord Brass. I used a 1:1 mix of Decayed Metal and Runelord to blend all the transitions. Finally a Highlight of 1:1 Runelord and Game Color Silver with some touches of pure Silver as the final highlight.
The red gems were all base coated using Flesh Tearers Red, and shaded towards the top right using a mix of Flesh Tearers and Black. First Highlight was Evil Sunz Scarlett, that included the dot on the dar part that will be white at the end. For the subsequent highlights on the Light side I used:
Wild Rider Red
Fire Dragon Bright
Lugganath Orange
Finally a small dot of pure white in the dark corner.
The green gems (Blade), were basecoated with two layers of Ork Flesk Contrast, then shaded mixing black again. Highlights were:
1:1 Moot Green and Warpstone Glow
Moot green
1:1 Moot Green and Lemon Yellow
Finally the blade was done by glazing Volupus Pink carefully and slowly to create the gradients and a final edge highlight of Silver. I tried that method for the Wraithlord and it was a pain in the ass, so I did the other half of the blade with the airbrush and a little cleanup. with Silver.
And that's it!
This took me about 6-7 hours in total, it was worth it for a character and I'm very happy I took the extra time to do him justice.
Thanks for the support and I will catch you in the next one.
In the video you will find all the steps for the yellow armour and the blue helmets. It's basically a 100% airbrush video, so if you don't like that I can't really help you out.
There are a couple of things that are missing that I think I should include, I was just too tired to keep filming, picking up the black details almost killed my will to live. So find the steps detailed here:
WHITE CLOTH
Mask all the surrounding details with AMMO Mig Masking putty. Lovely stuff BTW.
Apply a full layer of Game Air Sombre Gray using the airbrush.
Using pure white, in my case Game Air, Apply a zenithal layer slightly tilted to catch all the folds and create an easy shading.
Refine shadows using Sombre Grey with the brush.
Refine the highlights and pick edges using White with the brush.
Freehand lines are Imperial Blue .
BLACK JOINTS
Pick all the joints with Black legion over the yellow airbrush work.
That's it.
WEAPONS
Same as the Fire Dragon video.
METAL
Same as the Fire Dragon video.
Thanks for everything! Next video we start working on Fuegan!
