Rick Derris, We Hardly Knew Ye

Hey everyone, here is the world premiere for the first short Ryan & I have ever made together titled 'Rick Derris, We Hardly Knew Ye'. We're going to be doing a whole Sidetracks episode about what it was like making this, but here's some context:

This short was made for a 37 hours film festival at Kevin Smith's Smodcastle Cinema. We had 37 hours to complete this, though we ended up finishing it in around 30 hours. We were provided the following criteria on Saturday, March 9 at 10 AM and had until the following day at midnight to submit it:

1. THE PROP: A HOCKEY STICK, which must be used in some form of action
2. THE CHARACTER: RICK DERRIS, let’s embody the true essence of the character
3. THE DIALOGUE: “How come we went out as long as we did”? “You had cable”

We had already decided to film in a motel so that we had control over the environment and after we received the requirements we quickly formed a story about a middle-aged Rick Derris' final hours alive. The character, seen in 'Clerks', was a personal trainer and it's later mentioned in 'Mallrats' that he fucked Gwen Turner on a pool table while she was dressed as The Bandit and he as Smokey.

We found out today that we were not selected for the festival, but we still had so much fun putting this together. A huge shoutout to our friend Ben for starring as Rick Derris and for all of you on Patreon as this short would not have been possible without your financial contributions.

Stay tuned for the episode where we dive into the making of this as well as more short films from us in the future!

Neat! Looking forward to hearing more about it and seeing more shorts from you guys 😎

Man for a guy who hated the Irishman Ryan sure did use a lot of CGI for this short

Another thing and this is how I would've added if I had a hand in this (Impossible given I live across the country from you) I would've gotten a cheap Pontiac Firebird and had Rick pull into the parking lot in in, I say this because currently I'm saving up for a cheap Pontiac Firebird (Surprisingly the 1979-81 don't go for much, there's one with a 454 V8 for sale near me only 15k)

"This short: In my top 10." - Ryan Lancello, about a year from now, probably

I like that concept of having a time constraint. A friend of mine had a 1 minute film fest going for a few years that I contributed to. The concept was your film is 1 minute and based around two words randomly generated to base the "story" on. (Shave Believe, Feeling Glue, etc.) It was super fun everytime. Being limited in scope or resources is a gateway to creativity and I hope that ethos carried through your process of making this. I look forward to more shorts, congrats dudes!

If you have a photo of one of their kids, I can get you the 37$ back

We enjoyed the pressure but were quite annoyed due to how long it took to track down the prop. More on that later.

Almost Cult Classics

They did not refund it in this case but it was only $37

Almost Cult Classics

By the time we thought of it it was too late

Honestly you guys should've used those jackets I sent ya, though the black and white would've made it a bit harder to notice

JokersJuicyAss

A sweet weekend treat! Do you guys like working on and completing something within the time constraints? What’s the shortest turnaround you’d do for a competition? (If you’d rather discuss this in Sidetracks, ignore me lol) Spoiler alert: The hockey stick made me wince, not gonna lie.

Mary and Steve

Also I showed this to a co worker of mine so maybe you might get a new Patreon

JokersJuicyAss

Glad to help out by giving you guys props

So when these film festivals dont select your films, do they give back the money they charge you to submit them? I know here in Detroit, when 48 hour film festivals and stuff were popping up every few months, they all died out after a few years from just people getting sick of having to pay money only to be rejected or dismissed.

Louie Caponecchia

He is. We blew all the budget to CGI him to look more visually appealing

Almost Cult Classics

Great short guys! I really enjoyed it. For some reason, I imaged Ryan as a balding, chubby guy. I was way, way off!

Danny Fontenot

Really gotten lost in the character and made out for a while...

Fuck Kevin Smith and the VCR rental shop he rode in on, it was pretty good boys well done

Steven Trotter

I didn't believe your characters dated. You should have kissed.
