Patreon Exclusive: James Gunn Movies & Coyote vs. ACME Discussion
Added 2024-03-12 00:09:04 +0000 UTCHey everyone, here's the follow-up to our episode on Mystery Men where we discuss a similarly themed movie directed by James Gunn called Super (2010). This lead to us also discussing his movies Slither (2006) and The Suicide Squad (2021) as well as the Coyote vs. ACME debacle. Enjoy!
We also spent the weekend actually shooting a short film of our own which you will hear more about very soon!
Comments
Nothing Lasts Forever - The film was completed and scored in 1984 but never released. The film features Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd and has been shown on TV a few times. You all should check it out.

2024-03-25 21:13:58 +0000 UTCAh, yes...Dan Schneider I knew originally as the fat guy on Head of the Class. I didnt hear he raped anyone, he was just a huge creep and constantly making the kids do weird foot stuff
Louie Caponecchia
2024-03-22 06:47:01 +0000 UTCAlso very recently a doc came out about how Dan Schneider a former big name showrunner at Nick literally raped a lot of the cast and how he got away with it for years and how Nick hide it from the public for years. Like man Hollywood is horrible, I'm glad to be a cart pusher

2024-03-20 23:34:58 +0000 UTCAlso the scene where he tests whatever drug on her (they might say it’s heroin in the movie. I don’t remember) Needle in the foot iirc. Genuinely made my skin crawl back in the day. Edit: Now that I think about it that’s why Liv Tyler’s performance is so spacey throughout. She’s doped up most of the film.

2024-03-17 15:16:34 +0000 UTCAt 22 minutes in, Ryan says Disney would never have hired someone like James Gunn back in the day due to his edgy tweets. I should remind all that Disney DID hire already convicted child rapist director Victor Salva to direct the film Powder in 1995. One of his victims was literally protesting out on the streets of the premiere, and Disney claimed they just had no idea and didn't know anything about Salvas very recent past. Even though 7-11 will run a basic background check before hiring you to dust off the pringles cans.
Louie Caponecchia
2024-03-17 07:04:19 +0000 UTCBill is 100% correct. My friend literally explained it this way to me back when the movie came out. I literally put Super up in my top 5 films. Seriously, its there with Godfather.

2024-03-17 06:54:21 +0000 UTCMy friend Babette Bombshell has been treated great by him, but she's an actor in a few of his projects, and kaufmans daughters doc on roger ailes. I have watched two behind the scenes documentaries on Toxic Avenger 4 and Terror Firmer though, ...and absolutely nothing about a Lloyd Kaufman production looks comfortable, ideal, welcoming, or worth it. I have heard from Babs and others that within the first few weeks, a certain number of people walk off, and a certain number of people are thrown off because the conditions drive them to fist fights or threats

2024-03-16 22:10:49 +0000 UTCThis is somewhat related to the shelved movie discussion: have y’all seen or heard of The Primevals? The director was trying to get the movie made as far back as the 70s and finally got started in the 90s. He was a big stop-motion guy and passed away before they could really get work done on the effects. Steve and I saw it tonight - the animation was really good! Pretty smooth. The story was a little lacking but overall enjoyable.

2024-03-14 03:25:49 +0000 UTCHighly recommend checking out The Specials. It is like a good pilot for an offbeat, Mystery Men-esque show about everyday drama in a superhero world (with all the mundane and melodramatic trappings of reality). The whole James Gunn controversy is evidence of the blind eye that movie studios take to the "controversial/bad taste" humor of the comedic talents they hire. The whole thing smacked of the Gilbert Gottfried Affleck Insurance "controversy". As a huge fan of Roger Rabbit and growing up on Rescue Rangers, Chip & Dale tried so desperately to be a new Roger Rabbit. It had good ideas, visual and conceptual but the rest was crutches of mid-level writing, type-cast performances (Keegan Micheal Key, Seth Rogen, etc.), and a cartoon gorilla-sized fistful of nostalgia pills. It was proof of the adage that "A copy of a beautiful thing is an ugly thing". Hats off to the animators for bringing it all to life but boo to the writers and actors for keeping it lifeless. Loved the episode. Thanks for the great content and looking forward to Bowfinger and adjacent film talk!

2024-03-13 16:37:49 +0000 UTCAnd I'm happy to say The Cannonball Run 1 is pretty good, wasn't worth all of the hoops I had to jump through just to watch it

2024-03-13 09:05:45 +0000 UTCOkay another one, I don't think I ever really got into my writings on this podcast but as a hobby I write, and I have this massive series called Paradise City Stories, it's a period piece drug dealer story but it's more so based on video games like GTA Vice City (Stories), Scarface, Saints Row, etc so a lot more violence and car chases than you will normally see. Anyways one character is heavily based off of Lee Majors, Evel Knievel, your favorite Nick Nolte, and Burt Reynolds. So yeah I'm a pretty big fan of Burt Reynolds

2024-03-13 09:00:07 +0000 UTCEnjoyable listen as always even if I disagree with some of the takes. (Although I do agree with a chunk of your arguments.) Bear with me cause I didn't rewatch this but I've seen it many times in the past. He is a delusional person from the jump. The wife never loved him, he just happened to meet her in a very vulnerable place. If you've ever known a recovering addict, it makes sense that they would end up together in a period of her life like that. Kevin Bacon runs a strip club which leads to her relapsing and running off with him. She isn't kidnapped at first. She's with him to feed her addictions. The scene outside the club where he is trying to get her to come home with him and they beat the shit out of him-Great soundtrack btw. That Eric Carmen song scoring the beating is charming in a dark way. THAT is why he doesn't immediately go after her upon becoming Crimson Bolt. The way it plays out is a little wonky sure but in the context of this world, it makes sense to me. One thing I like to point out to people if they don't notice it in this: Rooker does almost nothing in the movie... almost. When Crimson Bolt is storming the mansion and the stuff going on upstairs, he has this look on his face like he KNOWS they deserve to die. And it's a great... few seconds of a performance without saying a word. Revisit that if you can and tell me if you agree. Either way still happy to hear you guys talk about it. Thanks for listening.

2024-03-12 18:17:46 +0000 UTCMy brother and I were talking about the tax write offs the other day and he felt that if a Studio is willing to write off the movie for tax reasons, they should write off the movie completely and enter it in the public domain. I kind of agree, but our copyright laws and keeping copyright are so messed up it's unclear what the repercussions would be, and who knows how the different unions will respond to that or what obligations the studios would have for them. Also, last episode you two mentioned that you had never read the novel Gone With the Wind. It is long, but it'd definitely worth the read. Mitchell grew up in a family who told her the south had won and when she basically write the novel in response telling southerners to move on. O'Hara is also one of the best characters ever written. She's willing to do anything to survive and in a time where characters are written to be perfect it's refreshing to read a character who does have flaws, but doesn't let that stop her

2024-03-12 16:13:03 +0000 UTCI’m a sucker for mockumentary stuff but I never really got into The Office because everyone was always hyping it up too much. Abbott Elementary is cute and I was enjoying Welcome to Flatch with Seann William Scott (local fave lol) while we still had Hulu but I’m so over the whole stare-down-camera gag too. Like, I never see that in what little real docs I have seen.

2024-03-12 15:41:01 +0000 UTCI remember being excited to watch Super because of the trailers. At the time I was pretty into superhero stuff, especially slightly off-beat stuff and bought the dvd the same day I bought Kick-Ass, thinking they’d sort of be in the same vein. Kick-Ass has not aged super well but I have a nostalgic soft-spot for it. Super on the other hand? Y i k e s. To be fair though, all I remember is the scene where Page’s character sexually assaults Wilson and says ‘it’s all gooshy.’ It was shocking, I’ll give ‘em that.

2024-03-12 12:31:09 +0000 UTCLove movies about the stupidity of making movies sometimes (and mad-cap con-man comedies). The first things that came to mind I think you guys would love were like "Living in Oblivion" starring Steve Buscemi as a no-budget director, or a movie I really loved "CQ" about making crappy euro-trash movie in the style of Barbarella or Danger Diabolik. Also love "The Stuntman" but that's kind of a different beast.

2024-03-12 06:54:08 +0000 UTCHey Joe for that Vietnam thing, was that a yearly thing or not, if it was then fuck them, like it's already bad enough that some scumbag who has been there longer than they should have fucked up again and didn't know this big event was going on, but honestly fuck those families too, how much sympathy can you get from something that affected everyone in this country while also milking that every year, especially for a private school like you went to, like I'm trailer trash I get War Drafts my family have been threw many, but here's the thing I never went to private school it's notable that in the Family Tree for my dad (Not his side of the family, I mean in the line that ends with me) I'm the first male to graduate High School, I grew up poor, I didn't go around making a sob story that my Great uncle was drafted in Nam, especially not getting the school to make this whole big event with other families

2024-03-12 05:44:08 +0000 UTCHey Joe if you guys ever do a episode on Stroker Ace 1.) Should I find a model of a 1983 Thunderbird for that, I know Johnny Lightning makes them, and 2.) Do you need a copy of The Cannonball Run because fun fact you can't stream it anywhere for some fucking reason, you can stream 2, it's free on Youtube right now office upload, but you can't watch 1 on Youtube, can't stream it on Amazon, it's not on Netflix etc, I'm ranting this because last month Smokey and the Bandit 1-3 were free on Youtube and I gave them a watch (Also Smokey and the Bandit 2 is actually awful, 3 is always called the worse but 2 is actually bad, 3 is very fun and there is car chases in it which 2 lacked.) And then I saw The Cannonball Run 2 was Free to Watch (Still is, it's probably going to be like The Wrath or Convoy in that it's going to be there for years) so I gave that a watch but then after watching how bad Cannonball Run 2 was I thought, "Man that sucked, where's 1 that has to be better" and now a month later after I had to buy a Blu Ray copy and wait for it to ship I'm asking you, Do you need a copy of The Cannonball Run for this show (Note this is not me saying it sucks, I just back home and I'm going to watch it tomorrow)
