I still think it’d be cool for you guys to come to the Scream it Off Screen short film festival/gong show if you’re ever in Minneapolis for some reason. (Free to enter, up to 15 shorts are shown, none of it is pre-screened and after a few minutes a red light comes on and the audience can make them shut off the movie if they yell loud enough. There’s super duper amateur shorts up to full-on independent productions.)

From Dusk til Dawn always reminds me of my dad taking my mom out to see it for a date night ‘because George Clooney’s in it’ and she was LIVID. She loathes vampires and that sort of thing. My dad also turned on the It miniseries at the hospital the night I was born. Or shortly after taking me home? Not the smartest dude.

I think there are times when smaller budget, indie-level films can achieve breathtaking visuals shooting on digital. The problem for me comes from the learning curve for a generation of filmmakers who now think that they are the de facto DP or in some cases even the camera operator. So now, you're suddenly able to see every shot without having to worry about having your eye on the lens, or able to run things back instantly without the need for dalies. I feel like it makes a guy like Rodriguez, who's composition and lighting has very definite influences in 70s and exploitation film, that much more likely to emulate all these great memorable scenes in a way that feels empty and superficial without even realizing it.
