You mentioned Paul Schrader, so may I suggest a movie called BLUE COLLAR from 1978. It's written and directed by Paul Schrader, starring Harvey Keitel, Richard Pryor, and Yaphet Kotto. It's a crime film set in Detroit that deals w/ the auto industry union and their shady nature. A great film no one ever talks about. I grew up in Flint and had family that worked at GM, so it's a sentimental favorite of mine.
