Godot Port Update - Wolfram

Good morning wastelanders,
I am just about complete with the planning and research phase of developing the quest system. A proper quest system is complex and is a huge part of any RPG. Gameplay can easily, and almost always does, revolve around this system of quests. In FS, this means accessing story content in addition to experience, and item rewards.

 There are many ways to do quests in a game. Some games use a small handful of quest types, each prefabricated and working relative the same way. fetch this, go here, kill this, ect. others have random quest generation. Some mix the both of them to provide diversity and increase replayability. However, The OG devs of Flexible Survival had chosen in the past to instead, hardcode their quests.

 This means each quest is unique and handcrafted. The downsides are obvious: lots of work goes into writing each one, a lot of quest logic must be written over again for each quest, and it takes longer to do fewer things. On top of that, it's incredibly challenging to create a journal and quest log system to helps the player keep track of all this. I believe the benefits, however, are highly valued among both writers and players: infinite flexibility and control over the structure of each quest and the ability to add features and game mechanics to the quest line that don't exist elsewhere in the game. Quests in FS can feel real and personal, instead of repetitive and grindy.


Because of this, the intense desire to keep track of all this content being created, and the fact that porting the inform experience perfectly as is over to godot is simply not possible, I have chosen to explore revamping the way quests are tracked and their information is stored while preserving as much of the inform look and flow as I can. To this end, we will be having a meeting this weekend to talk about the new system and make sure the process is understood, acceptable, and that any concerns and ideas from the people who are going to be actually using this system are addressed and heard. I would also encourage discussion amongst yourselves around this so we can hear from you all what your own concerns and desires are for and from the quest system.
