Another good movie is Utvandrarna ”The Emigrants” (Gustav Skarsgård). It’s based on a book by Vilhelm Moberg on which they made a tv series 1971. It’s about the hard life in Sweden in the 19th century that forced many people to emigrate to the US. (Allt för Sverige) The tv series are a bit too old but they made a movie a couple of years ago which I really recommend.

Helena Lissing

Ted: för kärlekens skull / Ted: For the sake of love (if you can find it with English sub)

Mikaela Thunell

Agree, that would have been interesting to hear about. I don't know too much about what they think

Mikaela Thunell

Oh that's awesome haha! I might have to add that to the line up. I thought that town was pretty interesting. I would love to hear what the locals think. I wish that guy would of asked some locals.

Dwayne Dawkins

I saw your last Sweden-video on YouTube. There's a fictional film about how they have to move Kiruna since the whole town is about to collapse. It's called Avgrunden in Swedish, and "the abyss" in English I think. It's on Netflix 😇

Mikaela Thunell

Another suggestion for film Fridays : Tore (Netflix, 6 episodes about 30 minutes each)

Mikaela Thunell

Thank You Bertil :). I will put both of those suggestions on the Timetable. They both sound interesting. i'll check out the clip.

Dwayne Dawkins

The best war movie of all time: Taistelu Näsilinnasta 1918 - or Battle at Näsilinna 1918 The movie is based on Diaries of the soldiers and follows captain Melins company during battle of Tampere (or Tammerfors in Swedish), it is very historical accurate depiction and even though it's from the whites perspective they still show the awful atrocities the committed even though they just show those that they can confirm from diaries, as a history buff I highly recommend the movie, the war caused a national trauma which lasted for 2 generations, both those who were directly involved and their children, it really made me emotional https://m.imdb.com/title/tt1941668/ If you prefer something more funny I would recommend Welcome to Sweden which is like 90% in english and is about an American who met a Swedish woman in the US who choose to move with her to aweden and the series is about all the culture clashes Americans can be involved in while visiting Sweden You can start by watching this clip https://youtube.com/watch?v=fvFZULPiiuk&pp=ygUdSG93IHRvIG5vdCBuZWlnaGJvdXJzIHN3ZWRlbiA%3D

Bertil

Oh, if you want a true picture of what Swedes life's looks like (mid class, generally speaking, some exaggerations) you can watch Bonusfamiljen. It's on Netflix, 10ep per season (except season 4). I personally love the whole series, but if you just want that glimpse of life in Sweden there's no need to watch all four seasons.

Mikaela Thunell

There is also a good tv series called Innan vi dör. Perhaps you’ve already watched the English version, Before we die. The Swedish one is better in my opinion 😁

Helena Lissing

I have recommended Kalifat before, and I still do.

Helena Lissing

I just watched it for myself, and maybe it'll be hard to find with all needed subtitles since TV4 don't have English subtitle and you have translate not only what said out loud, but also texts that's just seen on the phone screens, the text on the intro screen etc. And if you watch it, be prepared it involves a lot of sexual scenes 🙈 Maybe you can watch one out of all documentary's instead, bc I really think it's an interesting case just as Clark was. Maybe just not start with "I blind tro" (translates to something like "blinded by faith") tho, you want to know the established theories before watch how those are questioned.

Mikaela Thunell

Another Swedish series that I think you would find interesting is Knutby (TV4). It's dramatized but based on the true story of "Knutbymorden", murders committed with in a sect in the area of Knutby

Mikaela Thunell

Yeah I can't wait for the TV Show it's on the list :)

Dwayne Dawkins

For FilmFridays I would love to see you reacting to Störs av allt/quicksand (Netflix, series of 6 episodes)

Mikaela Thunell

I suggest you watch a Finnish movie called Sisu. It's from 2022 or 2023.

T. Sundström

you should watch finnish movie called "Täälä pohjantähden alla" which is based on Koskela's family the officer from unknown soldier who died while destroying the tank in the end. the movie shows how Koskela's brothers died in war and how his father was commander in finnish civil war on side of the red guard it will also give some perspective why Koskela wasn't so German friendly and more of a socialist type of person in the unknown soldier.

Kessu

Ok maybe I should do some reshuffling of the schedule to accommodate the original one also. FROM ALL OF US TO YOU i think would be good to watch just because it's a tradition in Sweden every Christmas. I'm just curious. Maybe I can pair the two together and watch them on the same day.

Dwayne Dawkins

I think you really should watch the original version of Karl-Bertil Jonssons Julafton as well. It's so short. Just about 28 minutes. So you at least have seen the original before watching the remake. And I really don't see the point at all watching FROM ALL OF US TO YOU. I don't know if someone has explained it to you, but it's not swedish at all. It's for sure a swedish tradition to watch it every christmas but it's just a montage of old Disney movies. So it's really just an american production and it has nothing to do with Sweden at all. Except for that we watch it every year. But as I said, it's just clips of old Disney movies.

Fredrik Larsson

That sounds so good, thanks for the suggestion I will have a look and see if I can find a copy and add it to the schedule. Thanks Touko :)

Dwayne Dawkins

Hi, If you want to dive deep into Finnish culture, I recommend checking out Aki Kaurismäki's films. For example, The Man Without a Past is a very well-made, funny and touching film. It is part of Kaurismäki's Finland trilogy, in which he humorously delves into social problems in Finland. His latest film Fallen Leaves is also very good. I am pretty sure you will like them.

Touko Tanskanen

If you want to expand your Scandinavian experiences you could try Nightwatch (1994) [Nattevagten], a Danish movie that was remade in the US 1997 with Ewan McGregor. Either version is a really good movie.

Steamboat Willie

Yes, we're a bit late in Sweden this year... All Saints Day is tomorrow over here. But you can always go to a cemetary or other memorial place of significance to you tomorrow, light a candle and tell your friends you're doing it the Swedish style this year! :-)

Steamboat Willie

This sounds like a good watch I'll put it on the list :)

Dwayne Dawkins

All Saints Eve and Halloween was were earlier this week. But I will definitely still check out these movies. Thanks SW :)

Dwayne Dawkins

.. and since it's All Saints Eve on Saturday I would recommend "The Phantom Carriage" (1921) It's generally considered the first horror movie, very nice for Halloween or right after. It's in the public domain, and you can get it for free on Youtube.

Steamboat Willie

Man on the Roof (1976). If you liked Clark - Clark loved this movie.

Steamboat Willie

Oooh! Definitely, I love Christmas movies and Christmas in general. I will put that on the schedule. I'm thinking maybe the 22nd December, the same day I watch the Allt För Sverige Jule special :)

Dwayne Dawkins

As it's christmas time soon I think you should react to the swedish christmas movie "Tomten är far till alla barnen". Called "In bed with santa" in english. Released in 1999. The one and only christmas movie that you need. :)

Fredrik Larsson

Thank you! :) that’s really helpful. I’m going to be adding some more movies on this week. I’ll put a poll up to see what you would all love to see next and add these to the list. 😊

Dwayne Dawkins

I have some movie suggestions for Watch Wednesdays: Mother of Mine (2005, Finnish name: Äideistä parhain), Tove (2020), Elina: As If I Wasn't There (2002, Finnish name: Näkymätön Elina)

T. Sundström

It's a Netflix series

Zpitzer

I'll find the English subtitles, I'm sure there will be. Thanks Edward. I'll put it on the schedule :)

Dwayne Dawkins

Do not know if it has english subtitles but it is a must see: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2642442/

Edward Krook

Great show with a few Swedish actors in it. But not a Swedish show.

Fredrik Larsson

It's a really great show with a strong impact and very very well made. I definitely recommend it for an upcoming show.

Daniel N

I have not, but it sounds very interesting. Is it worth putting on the list for an upcoming tv show? I love the Skarsgård family. They're all very talented so I know whatever they're in it's likely to be great.

Dwayne Dawkins

Dwayne, have you watched the 5-episode miniseries Chernobyl? Harrowing show about how and why the Chernobyl accident happened in 1986. Directed by Johan Renk (Swedish artist etc.) with Stellan Skarsgård in a major role. Very good show.

Daniel N

Even though it would be fun to watch movies with you, the Clark series is pure entertainment. The fun thing is that Clark is portrayed by Bill Skarsgård, the same actor who played the clown Pennywise in It. :)

Fredrik Larsson

Oh thanks haha! I thought it was a movies. Ok that kind of changes things. Hmm! I might have to re shuffle the schedule. Maybe run Clark alongside All for Sverige

Dwayne Dawkins

I wanna point out, since you didn't write season or episode, that Clark is a series and not a movie. It has six episodes. :)

Fredrik Larsson

Ooo I like the look of that movie. I will put it on the schedule, thanks Daniel :)

Dwayne Dawkins

I'd like to suggest the Swedish movie "Låt Den Rätte Komma In" (Let The Right One In). There's an American remake named "Let Me In" but it's like most remakes of foreign movies - americanised and most of the ambience and style was completely lost in translation.
