Okay, I didn't rad all comments so someone might already answered your question about the English proficiency, but I would say it rather a question about generation than what it's about where in Sweden you are. That's probably both due to the lack of global influences back then, but I also don't think English was part of the curriculum when they were they were young. Maybe, but this probably more my preconception, elderly who lives in the countryside have a lower proficiency than elderly living in bigger citys. When living in urban areas you naturally get exposed to it more frequently than in small citys. I don't think that adapts to younger people tho, due to the globalization etc. But for the older generation who didn't grew up with internet, didn't have social movements to the same extent as today etc the geographic aspect may had a bigger impact back then than it has than today.

I think it would be wholesome to every now and then take a step back and look on it from another pov. But I also think you need to understand that even if the problems just an imagination, it still causes suffer to that person. The combination of these two ways to look upon problems will probably contribute to being more humble. Thanks for the reminder of actually taking a step back an ask myself whether what I consider as problems in my life actually are real problems or not.
