Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: A Life Spent [5x03] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

What a fantastic Jemma episode! πŸ₯° Love her so much.

We are learning more about this society and how it works, bit by bit. So many questions still. But all in due time!

Thanks for watching! 😊 Let's discuss below. [Direct link here.]

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: A Life Spent [5x03] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

Comments

Just seen that you're now using a TV for your reactions - good upgrade! I've had a computer hooked up to my TV for almost 20 years, so unless I'm travelling that's how I watch all reactions/other content. The one comment I would make about that is make sure you're at the right distance for optimal viewing - I'm not sure how far away you are from the screen, but most people sit much too far away. For a 50" TV, you ideally want to be around 1.5m from the screen, and no more than 2m away (this is based on THX viewing recommendations - there's a few calculators available online that work this out for you). It takes a little while to get used to when you first set things up at those distances, but you quickly become accustomed to it - once you do, you'll wonder how people manage when they have things further away!

So, the episode. We've got a little bit more of a split focus than last time, Jemma and Kasius as one track, the Lighthouse at large as another, with Daisy and Deke connecting the two. Kasius we learn clearly has a temper, and given how the Lady Basha interacts with him we can get the distinct impression that the people he feels are contemporaries seem to look down on him. Inhumans are commodities here, valued for what their powers can do for others more than anything else. Also, there appear to be people on the surface of the Earth, even though it's supposed to be uninhabitable. Daisy has long had both a reckless and impatient streak, plus a degree of overconfidence since she got her powers - all are in full force here, combined with a healthy dose of denial that she's the cause of the destruction of Earth. She believes she can rescue Jemma herself, but as is typical for her she's just winging it rather than coming up with a plan, and isn't thinking about the consequences. To be fair, this often works for her, but there have been a number of occasions where it hasn't and has royally bitten her in the ass - this is unfortunately one of those times. Deke however clearly approaches things from the opposite angle - playing the long game as he says. He also clearly keeps his plans to himself, allowing him to play both sides.

I like the look of the new set-up, and it does look more comfortable for you. The one thing that bugs me is having the PIP in the top right - every time I've seen a reaction where the episode/movie isn't where the reactor is looking it not only feels weird, but it seems harder to focus on both the reactor and the content at the same time.

I like the new set-up! The backdrop looks nice, and it has a comfy vibe. If I had to nit-pick, I'd say the distance between your camera and your monitor (where you are looking when watching the show vs when looking into the camera) seems slightly larger, and reducing it might be better. But that's just a "nice-to-have".

The Kree have always been important to Agents of Shield lore and we have had many appearances throughout the seasons. In 1x14 (The dead Kree used to revive Coulson), The Kree that fought Sif in 2x12, and the two soldiers who fought Hive in 3x19. The Kree are also the ones who created Inhumans as weapons to fight in their wars but we have never really focused on that fact so this season is fleshing out Kree and their culture while also comparing them to humans and what we do for survival. Do you think Grill's right hand man deserved to die for following the rules of this twisted society? Simmons has come along way from when she first was scared of inhuman powers and terrigenesis. I left a better look of Earth and Lighthouse in Marvel chat. Love the new set up as well.
