Apocalypse Now (1979) โœฆ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

This is a compliment about the movie: I'll never watch it again. ๐Ÿ˜… (But I do think everyone should watch it at least once.) Version watched is the theatrical version: 2h27m

Looking forward to your comments! [Direct link here.]

Easily one of my all-time favorites. I've seen it many times, in its various edits. I don't always agree with doing the theatrical version of films over later director revisions, as I prefer many director's cuts (and in some cases, they are absolutely the one that people should see for their first viewing), but in this case I think doing the theatrical is a proper first experience. I personally prefer The Final Cut, as I think the Redux version adds too much back in and The FInal Cut finds a happy medium. But the theatrical cut is a perfectly good cut to go with and prefer. FWIW, this is arguably the most difficult movie ever made, production-wise (ones like The Abyss are up there, too). It was an insanely challening shoot that had so many difficulties and setbacks, with the last act morphing and eventually pretty much being figured out on the fly, after everything else had already been one of the hardest film productions ever. It was pretty much Coppola putting himself on the line, risking everything, and is kinda one of the biggest and most insane independent productions ever. One can scarcely know where to start when talking about how difficult a production it was. The Cinema Tyler YouTube channel has, for the last 5 years or so, been cranking out SPECTATULAR episodes breaking down and analyzing all the parts of the film & production and has, as of today, 27 fantastic episodes of the series of videos about the making of the movie. It's nearly complete and is the greatest "making of" analysis of the making of a movie that I have ever seen. For anybody interested in the production fo the movie, I can't possibly recommend the series of videos enough. It's a heck of a deep dive into all of the insanity of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIGAcW86ZJ0&list=PLGciYgiR4atEUey1J37g4Bjy7rI2wzPi3&index=1

I've only seen Dennis Hopper in Speed (just checked) - definitely don't know him!

Great film. Great reaction. My favorite part of your reaction was when you said, "This actor's really good", when referring to Dennis Hopper's monologue. I couldn't tell whether you knew it was Dennis Hopper and was being low key about it, or whether you genuinely didn't know it was Dennis Hopper. Either way, that reaction was very cool. And just a note on that monologueโ€”"the man is clear in his mind, but his soul is mad..."โ€”there is an excellent film called Nil By Mouth (it'll probably never show up on your reaction radar, but if you like super bleak British indie films, I'd highly recommend you give it a watch) which has a scene where one of the characters is watching Apocalypse Now and recites Hopper's entire monologue while it's playing on the tv.
