10 Things I Hate About You (1999) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

I hope you enjoy watching me smile giddily and stupidly for 1h39m. Oh Heath, the career you would have had if you weren't taken so soon. 💔 Looking forward to your comments. [Direct link here.]

10 Things I Hate About You (1999) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Comments

One last ting I forgot to mention but was reminded surfing LBX: I have to know if Christopher Nolan has seen this movie, given he has worked with Ledger, Gordon-Levitt, and Krumholtz. Apparently one of his favorite movies is the R-rated comedy MacGruber, so...it's possible!

I watched this reaction the same day as Bill & Ted. Oh boy, my face hurts from smiling along through both of these.

When I first watched it I cried at the poem scene. Anyway in highschool my 1 and only punishment was a 1 day in school suspension that didn't go on my record. I'm like shit, I still have to go to school though? lol. Wound up sitting in an activity/study room. Students would come in and want to talk to me. The teachers would tell them I wasn't allowed to talk to anyone lol.

It wasn't until I did this rewatch that I noticed the care in which so much of the music was chosen, especially when it comes to the lyrics. Given they're existing songs rather than written for the film, selecting songs that fitted the feel of the movie but also had lyrics matching events as they happened took a lot of care and attention. Beyond that, there are so many great performances of some really relatable characters. I also love that (without the obvious exception) the guys were all pretty good guys. Patrick not wanting to take advantage of Kat when drunk, Cameron checking with Bianca that Kat will be OK, Michael finding not being afraid to embrace what Mandella loves to date her and even Walter who clearly cares about his daughters and is having trouble letting go (especially as a single dad).

Now that I've watched it: I'm pretty sure you concluded you were right or maybe saw it in the credits, but that is indeed Seattle. The landmark in question is called the Space Needle. I didn't say before watching but I get the impression you did not realize that this was an adaptation of William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew. There are lots of Shakespeare references in there, aside from the literal ones, like Cameron saying "I burn, I pine, I perish!" when he first sees Bianca, or the fact that Patrick's last name Verona and the school's name Padua are both borrowed from the play. Michael also calls Kat "the shrew" when he is first telling Cameron who she is. I've seen this movie in full with three reactors and you are the first person who responded to one of the touches I like best, which is Bianca being the one to take Joey down a peg. I have always liked that even though Bianca is the butt of a couple of jokes about being stupid early on, and even though she can be a bit of a brat, the writers still respect her character enough to give her an arc. Bianca punching out Joey is also a great subversion of stuff like Back to the Future, where it was George having to punch out the bad guy. One thing I hadn't noticed in all my years watching it but which Ashleigh pointed out and I love is that when Kat goes to the prom, she is wearing her mom's pearls, because Bianca let her have them, or they have agreed to share them. Julia Stiles has said the same things you loved about Kat are the reason she wanted to do the role. Given her age, she was naturally being offered lots of teen comedies like this, and this was the first one that had a character that she connected to and thought was cool.

Thanks Keeley! I should start mentioning that when I use D+, cause yeah they have credits that roll in a variety of foreign languages at the very end of the video and it's included in the runtime.

Thanks

Sorry I commented then had self doubt haha. My original comment: the dis+ version is the same length as the other versions. I watched the reaction with it and it was exactly the same. The extra minute is just extra credits after the entire movie and original credits roll.

Keeley Thurman

I was going to watch, but not sure what specifically makes the Dis+ copy longer than pretty much all others. The original run time is stated as 1hr 37 mins. Anyone know which parts make the Dis+ version longer?

Daryl

This movie is so 1999 I expect you to have spiked frosted hair by the end of it....it's also a really charming Shakespeare adaptation. Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles shine here. Good shit.

Steve Mercier

Enjoy!

I won't be able to watch this for another four hours, but here's some things I can say upfront: This is probably my #1 high school movie of all time, just beating out Amy Heckerling's Clueless (1995) and Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982), Brick (2005), Angus (1995), Ghost World (2001), Eighth Grade (2018), Footloose (1984), Heathers (1988), and Mean Girls (2004). I suppose one could make the case that Back to the Future (1985) counts, but I'm gonna leave out any with sci-fi or fantasy stuff in them. I thought it was very funny when, a few weeks after I had named this movie as my choice, you said in your birthday Live that you had a childhood crush on David Krumholtz. Looking forward to seeing your reaction to him popping up in this. This is by the same two writers as Legally Blonde, Karen McCullah and Kirsten Smith. They have gone onto write some other things that I don't like quite as much. When Legally Blonde 3 was originally announced, they were supposed to be writing it, but as of a more recent update they didn't seem to be involved anymore, which is a shame. The high school the film was shot at is a real high school in Tacoma, WA, near where I live. A couple of years ago they had a screening of the film on the football field from the movie as a fundraiser, but I had either just watched or knew I was going to watch the film with a reaction from Mary, and didn't go, which I regret. I hear the cliffside is deteriorating, and some of the school's buildings have been closed as a result; hopefully they figure out some way to stabilize it rather than closing it. The paintball setup in the park isn't real, but the park, Gasworks Park, is real (I assume all the pipe art and stuff is in the actual park given the name; I haven't been to it). The troll under the bridge that Cameron and Bianca climb on is also a real sculpture you can visit in Fremont, WA. One of my favorite teachers taught at this school while the movie was being made. She said you can see her students in the film as extras. The scene of Stiles reciting the poem that gives the movie its title was the first and only take, and the crying was unplanned. The blonde singer in the fictional band seen in the film is Kay Hanley, performing with her real band Letters to Cleo. She was also the singing voice of Josie in Josie and the Pussycats. All three movies form a little triangle Venn diagram, as Legally Blonde also has Elle Woods complain about "whoever said 'orange is the new pink,'" an intentional reference to Josie and the Pussycats slipped in because both LB and Josie were produced by Marc Platt.

I'm not always one for "Romcom" films, but 10 Things I Hate About You is one of my favourite movies. Haven't got time to watch this today, but looking forward to doing so tomorrow :D With the comment about Heath, films like this and A Knights Tale are why people thought he wouldn't be good as the Joker as it was such a different role, but just shows what they knew :)

Paul Howard

See I should be working, but it's 8pm; the other people on the team haven't delivered what I need; and I'll never give up a chance to watch this movie

Rob Stanley

Oh, don't worry, it doesn't read like that at all. He appeared to be a special person as well as a talented actor. From what you can glean from interviews and clips. His larger catalogue would have undoubtedly been special.

Daryl

Just realized my Heath comment could be interpreted to mean that he DIDN'T have a good career before he passed, that's not what I meant at all. It's just tragic when talented people pass young, that's all. ❤️
