Firefly: The Train Job [Ep 2] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

Comments

I loved the reaction, and always enjoyed this episode because the baddie was scary bad. You mentioned Why didn't he just go back with the money? Well our big baddie talked about reputation, and I think he felt his reputation didn't include breaking any part of a deal no matter how reasonable it seemed. Fortunately, there's always another Henchman.

It is SUCH a good moment haha

OK, your reaction to this episode was hilarious! Your facial expressions when you realized Simon doped Jayne on purpose, and when Crow got kicked into the engine. Awesome. 🤣

Ah...the first...second...episode. Stupid FOX. Watched this when it first aired, and thought that was a pretty good pilot episode...but it seems really quick and jam-packed, even for a pilot. So of course, many weeks later, when they aired the actual pilot 'Serenity' as the last episode...after the show had already been canceled...I thought, 'Hmm...this would've made a really spectacular pilot. Oh, wait...' Still, all things considered, this is a damn good episode, especially given that Joss Whedon and Tim Minear had something like a week to write it. Stupid FOX... Also, Mal kicking Crow into Serenity's engine is one of my favorite series moments.

It's roughly at the 37s mark on your timer, but I don't know if it's exactly the same length every episode (I've only ever seen Firefly on DVD/Blu-ray). There's a fade to black after Serenity (the ship) engages her engine at the end of the intro - immediately after that fade is when the episode proper starts

My grandpa was a Western afficionado so I def have a few recommendations for you!

Def in my Western era at the moment. Time for some movies soon, I think!

Oh shoot, I had no idea (obviously). Are you able to tell the timestamp of when people should start their sync from?

Damn, I feel so sorry for River because of the PTSD she has from whatever the Alliance did to her. Summer Glau acts those scenes so well. I really wish Mal would open up to Shepherd just a little. In the Battle of Serenity, we saw Mal kiss a cross so he was a believer at one time. Must have lost his faith when the war was lost, as anyone would. I feel Shepherd would completely understand, Mal just wants to shut out any chance of getting hope and faith back, which is understandable. Kind of hard to hear "God has a plan" when it seems winning the war wasn't part of that plan. If you ever find yourself returning to the Terminator franchise, there is a two-season show called Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles in which Summer Glau co-stars! It technically fits between parts 2 and 3 but the franchise has like 3 different timelines so at your discretion lol Pretty fitting you're playing Red Dead 2 while watching this show with all the western feels!

Quick note as I start watching - that ~30s intro was something that was added to the broadcast version because Fox skipped Serenity, and contains spoilery scenes from later episodes (because Fox aired the episodes they did air out of order). More importantly, the DVD/Blu-ray releases don't include it - so any of us who are syncing up using a copy from a physical disc are going to find it very hard to sync the reaction

As mentioned by someone else in the comments for Serenity, Fox didn't like that episode as a pilot (for a *lot* of reasons) and asked for a replacement - and only gave Joss & Tim (Minear) a weekend to write it - The Train Job is what they came up with. I think it works surprisingly well, given they had to introduce a large cast, the world and tell a completely new story in half the time they had for Serenity. Obviously it can't compare with the depth Serenity provided, but it still gives the flavour of the show.
