She-Hulk: 101-103 ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Hi all! Sorry that this is coming out so late today. My cars battery decided to give out yesterday and that took up far too much of my time to get sorted. But all is well! I'm intrigued by this show so far. It feels like Hawkeye to me in that it's entertaining enough, but not anything super amazing or that it feels stand-out(ish). [Direct link here.]

Looking forward to your comments! Cheers,

She-Hulk: 101-103 ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Comments

Overall I enjoy this series and I’m enjoying watching the reactions. I’ll rewatch all 9 episodes just to see where you are when it’s over. Plus I’m recovering from surgery so I can’t drive or walk a great distance. These reactions may save me from going slowly insane. Back in the late 70’s The Incredible Hulk was a very popular tv series, it ran for 5 seasons and had 3 follow-up tv films even after it ended. Marvel was worried that CBS would randomly make a spin off of a female Hulk, a la The Bionic Woman series (you probably have no idea what that is), so Stan Lee himself jumped in and created Jennifer Walters as Bruce Banner’s cousin a DA who was saved from a mob hit by a blood transfusion from her cousin. Stan only wrote that first origin issue of The Savage She-Hulk. She was literally a copy of Bruce, turned big and green and dumb when she was mad. They did it just so they could have the copyright if the character happened on tv in the 80’s. The comic was canceled because it just really have anything to say. Then in the late 80’s it was relaunched as the fourth wall breaking character, but more significant it sold because it was very male gazing. Nearly ever cover was designed for the male gaze. There is actually an issue with She-Hulk nude being handed a jump rope and being told to start jumping because there are 22 pages to fill inside the issue. No on talks about it, but it was both wildly inappropriate and sold moderately well for a few years. I’m glad the character evolved and survived her history. I watched this series initially with my youngest daughter who loved the show and looked forward to each one. There are some genuine cringe CGI scenes, they look like cut scenes circa 2002, a lot of the walking scenes remind me of PS2 games. I admire your restraint by not commenting, but it pulls me out hard. I really enjoyed your reaction to the first episode the most and agree that Bruce and Jen did not act like cousins, more like brother and sister, which would be fine if they were close, but we have no story points that even implies that. But it was a decent origin episode so we could move on from there. And lastly, I had never heard of Megan Thee Stallion before this show (haven’t seen her since) and I still don’t actually know what she’s supposed to be famous for. I was just as surprised that you knew her as I was when my daughter knew who she was. I am old and out of touch apparently.

Treating it like a sitcom is probably the move, for sure.

I can actually understand the bad CGI complaints. I haven't really mentioned it, but it's not very good. At least compared to a lot of other stuff we've seen. It feels almost like AI generation at certain moments, with She-Hulk's face.

kaiielle

LOL that was good.

I liked the meta joke Hulk told, when he said “I was a different person, literally” haha S/O to Edward Norton.

Deffo a fun enough show, and Tatiana Maslany does a phenomenal job. Yeah, it gets a little silly at times, but that's entirely in keeping with the vibe of the comics, which are very fourth-wally at times. I did always get where the manosphere hate was coming from (they're idiots), and why the Megan Thee Stallion post-credits scene itself became its own little controversy (same as above), but I do not understand to this day why everyone was yelling about "bad CG" when this first came out. 🤦 As for any "how come..." or "but why..." question you might have during this, they'll all likely have the same answer: the ol' CAW. Comics Are Weird.

Tatiana Maslany is a Canadian/international treasure and I loved her performance. It's just a fun mid-level sitcom and people took it way too seriously because it has the Marvel tag!

I completely understand feeling this way. Thanks for sharing!

kaiielle

Ahh okay, that makes sense!

kaiielle

I def agree with you! A superhuman in law is going to be fun.

kaiielle

I understand that, for sure.

kaiielle

Yeah, that's totally valid.

kaiielle

Oh interesting! Had no clue she was the first, that's fun. Thanks for the info about how she is in the comics, I really appreciate that!

I really wanted to like this show because I am a fan of the actor playing She-Hulk, and I think she does a good job playing her. Overall it was a fun show and I enjoyed it, but it was my least favorite MCU show to this point. It tries to do a lot but is not funny enough as a comedy, story not good enough to be compelling dramatically, and no real action as a super hero show. It does not need all of those to be successful, but would have been nice to hit on one. But the performances are good, there are some really fun moments, and I do commend them for taking chances, even if they do not all work for me. Hope you have fun with the rest.

I should add that the "Mafia Hit gone wrong" story the press asked about is the comic origin. She was hit and Bruce had to give her an emergency transfusion.

One of the things from the comics about Hulks is that a lot of the look comes from the subconscious and what they feel they need. Bruce in the comics was abused as a child and called a monster and the Hulk brought out that image of himself and the strength and rage to defend himself. In the case of Jen, she feels unattractive so feels she needs to be more attractive.

While this show won't be considered Amazing it is still fun and I do feel it has its place in the MCU lore. We talked about how powered people in this world are treated and it is nice to have these kind of shows that directly address the law side. Asgardians, supersoldiers and Sorcerers are ridiculous things to have to deal with but someone has to so that's why Shehulk is needed as well as the superhuman law division. Shehulk also has the power to break the fourth wall like Deadpool to poke fun at the crazy things that happen in the comics or even the people writing the comicbook. Recently the banner on Disney plus switched Shehulk with Deadpool which is a shame but deadpool popularity definitely had an influence on that choice.

When I first saw this I thought it was really lazy writing. Since looking into the source material, I realize it's more like "nonchalant writing", where the conveniences, plot-holes, and weirdness is kind-of the point of it, and part of the comedy/"charm". They really dial up the "comic-book weirdness" to 11 on this show. It's not my favourite, tbh.

Onno Smits

Deadpool came after, was more crass and was more a villain starting out in the X-comics. He was definitely an easier character to bring to live-action, so he's been known and more popular because of that. Also the humor is a bit different, being more crass and off-the-wall. The 4th wall breaking is the only reason, I think, the characters get compared since no other characters do that. I think, if people do compare them, they're more likely to enjoy the one that they saw first, which is Deadpool for most. I read She-Hulk 1st so my preference tends to lie with that type of meta commentary.

She-Hulk was Marvel's 1st character to break the 4th wall to poke fun at the Marvel Universe specifically and comics in general. Her comic was never meant to be AMAZING or anything like that. It was always meant to be just a fun, self-referential comic character and the show reflects that. Because it's a concept not seen in the MCU before, many people were thrown off by it. I suppose she was always a niche character 'cause many comics readers sorta felt similar, but to less of a degree since comics readers are more primed to accept all different types of stories. She has a pretty good following in comics readers. I never had a problem accepting the character and premise for what it is, just a character that lives in this crazy universe but has the ability to see the absurdity of a lot of it. There's a thing that comics readers say when things get weird in their explanation and it's, "Well, ya know, because...comics." 😁 A lot of She-Hulk, as a character, is pointing that out. "OK, that was weird. Anyway..."
