Dark: The Paradise [3x08] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

Y'all... I do not think there is a better possible ending for a show that is written like this. I'm so emotional. And STILL emotional thinking about this at the time of sharing this! Even more so, actually. 🥲 [Direct link here.]
I'm so excited for your final thoughts! Not just on this finale, but this season, and the show entirely.
I've already started rewatching Dark and S1E1 was a TRIP. 😂 There are so many subtle details in that very first episode that make you do the "Leo pointing at the screen" meme when you've seen the whole show. And it just keeps going on and and on and on with every episode after it. So even though my original theory of how this show would end was incorrect, the rewatch experience is still incredible and will be such a different process.
Favourite Episodes?
It's so hard to pick. From Season 1, I really enjoyed Episode 5 (Truths) and Episode 10 (Alpha and Omega). From Season 2, definitely Episode 6 (An Endless Cycle) stands out above the rest. And Season 3, I can't help but love the final three episodes pretty equally as there were solid answers given to the entire story within each one. Each episode just focused on different answers.
And finally, I want to share some links that really helped me get some fuller understanding of this story:
Thanks so much for joining me with this! It's been an incredible time.
🎵 What a wonderful world. 🎶
✦ KL
Thanks for watching this KL and spurring me for a rewatch. I really enjoyed going back to Winden.
I shouldn’t be surprised that is fighting for your title as best show ever, because you were clearly loving it, but that is high praise. I think it benefits from only having 26 episodes. There are shows I probably liked more, but the consistency and greatness of Dark is special.
A few mild complaints/thoughts…
So the third world wasn’t a shock to me given the triquetra and everything having threes, particularly the three people vying for control of the knot and it seeming like an Adam-Ewa duality but Claudia still being involved. But – and I might be alone here – but adding the existence of the third world and having Tannhaus create the split and have that be the origin that needs fixing, it felt a little deus ex machina… like we’ve been spending three seasons moving multiple versions of the same people all over the place spanning centuries and we just had to go to the right time and place and stop a car crash and we’re all good? It felt like it kind of came out of left field for a show where it felt every other step had clues and logic to it the whole way.
I also didn’t love ‘the Unknown’. At its core this story, is a star-crossed lovers story of two people who are perfect for each other, but can’t be together… and their child, the product of this love doesn’t have a name is kind of the worst? In terms of plot it makes perfect sense. Thematically I didn’t love it. I also wish we had a little more of the Unknown with Agnes. I was always curious about that.
I think season 3 was maybe my least favourite because for half the season I thought the motivations were a little muddy. With all of the multiple versions of Jonas and Martha and talk about light and dark and bouncing around between timelines and the two worlds at a lot of moments it was hard to have that real solid “what does this person actually want in this moment?” feeling. That was much clearer as the season went on though.
The irony there is that ep. 5 and 7 (and the finale) from season 3 might be my favourite episodes. I think I like season 1 more than a lot of people. I liked the slower pace, a little time spent getting the understand the characters and have that grounding before things start to really get crazy (which is funny since season 1 feels like a pretty good mindfuck from the jump but is nothing compared to season 3).
The detail and depth of the plotting in this thing still boggles my mind every time I watch it. It wouldn’t matter if the acting, casting and shooting weren’t all top tier, which they are, but the web they weave is incredible. There are a lot of things they set up really well. Bernd and Claudia being a thing is a little weird, but also makes a certain amount of sense despite coming out left field. And there’s countless examples of that. They did so much in such a short amount of time. Like Ulrich has his first run in the law for beating up Katarina, but he didn’t do it. It was almost certainly her mom, but then way later we see her mom extremely young and pregnant, and so that cycle of abuse maybe makes more sense. We spent very little time with Helene, but we can glean a lot. There’s so much of that in this show which I appreciate the more I watch it.
I thought the show ended about as well as any show I can think of. As it happened I was hoping it would end with them all disappearing, but I realized the close scene of the few that remain behind helps us understand that there are people left and then to see everyone happy was a nice bit of closure. And then the idea that a Jonas will be born and Katarina is free to give birth to a Martha is kind of poetic.
I mentioned the Nena song “Irgendwie, Irgendwo, Irgendwann” in an early post and I don’t think you were feeling it, but it was played in each season including the first two episodes and then the end credits. I don’t think that’s just because it’s an 80s bop. Some of the lyrics include:
We fall through space and time
Towards infinity
Moths fly into the light
Just like you and me
Somehow begins someday
Somewhere the future
I'm not waiting much longer
Love is made out of bravery
Don't think for too long
We ride on fire wheels
Towards the future into the night
Give me your hand
I'll build you a castle out of sand
Somehow, Somewhere, Someday
Maybe I’m reading too much into that, but I like to think that it’s implied that somehow Jonas and Martha are born and end up together in Tannhaus’ world.

The scene with Jonas and Martha disappearing was so beautiful. That's exactly how I'd want to go, in complete acceptance with the person I loved most.
I loved how everything came together, tied up the knot (pun intended). I remember initially thinking the Triquera was representing the 3 time periods we started with but then to find out it's three WORLDS, wow! They did such an incredible job writing and directing this series in order to keep their secrets until the very last second.
Standing ovation to the cast and crew, everyone!
