STEP BY STEP // comic page from sketch to final

Hello my patrons

my new book "Les soeurs Grémillet" (Grémillet Sisters) , is out in France, Belgium and Spain, and the Italian, German, Norvegian, Danish, English versions (and some more I don't remember) are scheduled later this year. I'm really proud of my new "daughters" :) the series is written with Giovanni Di Gregorio and drawn and colored by me < a BIG work! I never colored myself an entire book, and this is a 70 pages!

I want to share with you the process for creating a page:

Image 2 is the reference board I did for tis market scene. The set is a mix between the french city of Vannes and famous Bordeaux street market. I likes the colors and architecture of the first, and the animated street life of the second.

I do a rough version of the drawings, then I place correctly every panel and place a rough verion of the textes for creating the balloons in the right position and shape.

Image 5 is the definitive version of the drawing. I do the values (shadows and lights) with grey watercolors. I don't ink for I want a more "artistic" feel.

I add colors digitally. In image 6 you can see the colors without the drawing.

Image 07: how the page looks like with digital colors. I put the balloons and textes and hop, it's finished.

Normally it takes me 2 or 3 days from the sketch to the finished page.

I hope this will be helpful, inspiring or just entertaining :)

hasta pronto!

Alessandro
