He does his best work and most pushes past his limits when he feels cornered while foundering about or at least slowing in his progress in situations that aren't driven by a feeling of necessity and right now that feeling is incredibly intense. He doesn't want to lose that even if going into a dungeon would be the smarter path and the better choice for earth. Ultimately if you look throughout the story this is pretty consistently a thing for Randidly to the point that I question his stated motivation of doing his best to save earth. There are countless time he could have made smarter decisions and better supported the world but chose to follow his own path instead becuase ultimately his actual motivation is pursuing this same continual push for strength against necessity.
