Now taking suggestions for SPOTLIGHT's return!

The new VS video will be live later tonight, but right now, I need your suggestions in the comments below for my return to the SPOTLIGHT series. Don't be afraid, I won't bite, but please, no hentai games. Think of little Timmy.

Now taking suggestions for SPOTLIGHT's return!

Comments

Have you ever talked about the rom hack Super Mario 64 Star Road? If not that

Chace Auclair

I’m going with the majority on this one and saying pizza tower lol

Balsamic Vin

Stardew Valley. I think you'd loved that game

Elijah C.

Pizza tower

Brownie Mutt

“The Outbound Ghost” and “Soul Stalker” by Conradical Games.

The Role Playing Gamer

Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games

JD Grawe

Void Stranger, a game made by the developers of Zero Ranger, another really good game

TemporaryMeme

How about a fast paced 3d indie platformer on the Switch called Lunistice? The game is pretty short so you might be able to fit a good chunk if not the whole story of the game in one video.

SteelJoe1120

Castle of Illusion is a short romp I'd like to see you tackle. Sayonara Wild Hearts as well though I'm not sure what you could comment on for that one. Touhou Luna Nights is a Metroidvania but it's more linear, fast-paced, you don't need much source material knowledge and also beatable in about 5 or less hours.

Kayas

Armorcore 6 my friend recommended this game and I would like to see you play it before hand

david alicea

Not the shortest games, but the Ys series would be well worth a look at, they're all solid RPGs, and the soundtracks are amazing.

Glasvaska

what about Viewfinder? a puzzle game with pictures. bad desciption but dont wanna reveal too much

lasse kroll larsen

2064: Random Access Memories. It’s a spiritual successor to Hideo Kojima’s cult classic game Snatcher.

Hank Foreman

Throwing in my hat for Sonic P-06. Along with Sonic, Shadow, and Silver now all being playable, there are some short in-game cutscenes that add little story bits that the original game didn't include. Pretty cool!

Viewer1082

I would love a spotlight on P-06 now that all the levels has been released

ChrisVello

Signalis! It’s a super dope horror game that takes huge inspiration from early resident evil and silent hill.

Ethan Wallace

Spark the electric jester

Khalid AL-Sumari

The Fantastic Kitty Rue is a fun little point and click game and Liberty Brlle is a good short platformer in the same style of A Hat in Time that is about 2 hours long

Lars Russell

I recommend VA-11 Hall-A. It's a game that mixes bartending and a visual novel that takes place in a dystopian future. It was released back in 2016 but I don't hear as many people talking about it nowadays. Not only are the visuals interesting, the soundtrack is amazing and great to just have playing in the background.

Delwin Rosa

Also, John I think that intro was only used once

SonicMania2099

If you're in the mood for RPGs Chained Echoes has been out since the end of last year and Sea of Stars (this one has a lot of buzz around it) is releasing tomorrow.

D3D

I’d recommend momodora.

Yousef

He played that over 12 years ago, when it was still available on the 360 & PS3

Nintega2000

A relook at terraria would be cool

Riley Thompson

I would say color Zen. It's a relaxing puzzle game where you have to maneuver colors to match the borders of the screen. It's very calming the ambiance is very light and when I feel stressed I sometimes pop it in and play for a bit.

Rodolfo Zorrilla-Rivera

Scott Pilgrim vs The World would be a good one to try.

Whentheynaming

Scott

Whentheynaming

I would recommend Psuedoregalia and Ultrakill. Psuedoregalia is a 3d platformer where you explore with very satisying and smooth movement. It does have metroidvania elements but I feel it being a 3d platformer and the more opened endedness of the castle sets it apart some from standard metroidvania's. Ultrakill is a very fast paced FPS with a focus on movement as well as style like DMC. (It even owns the domain devilmayquake.com)

Majora

- Iji: A freeware title by David Remar. A pretty solid platform shooter with a Spare/Kill enemies theme that while not flawless is uniquely executed. - Savant - Ascent: A cheap arcade like game that can be beaten quickly. The artwork is amazing and the music is worth the purchase alone. An updated Remix version is coming in a few weeks. - Owlboy: A gorgeous pixel game with a good story and solid gameplay. - Henry Stickmin Collection: A hilarious game loaded to the brim with video game references. Would work extremely well with the live thoughts format.

Hawkwing2652

You should try out mad rat dead, it is a rhythm platformer game that has amazing music, there is a demo on ps4 and Nintendo Switch if you want to give it a try.

Jerome Waters

I’ll toss my hat in the ring and recommend a spotlight on “Furi” or “Haven” by the game bakers https://store.steampowered.com/app/423230/Furi/ https://store.steampowered.com/app/983970/Haven/

King Arthur

Dread Delusion would be great. It’s an indie open world RPG, kind of in the same vein as early Elder Scrolls but on a much smaller scale. It is also in Early Access so take that as you will.

Tim Arendt

Pizza tower plz

Quinn Evans

Pizza Tower should absolutely be featured on Spotlight. You actually looked at an old build of the game during SAGE several years back!

MysteriousMrE

Legend of the Obra Dinn would be pretty great, it can be beat in a matter of a few hours, has a fairly interesting visual style and works with the gameplay, along with being fairly brain-teasing and a good story to boot.

Shahzeb Mangi

Have you ever tried any Smash fangames? Stuff like Smash Flash 2, Smash Bros. Crusade, Project Akaneia, stuff like that. I think those might be good games for something like Spotlight.

XenoSonic1

Sea of Stars quick edit have not played it myself its a RPG i just think its looks great and might be fun

Mr_Roche

Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid: Burst Forth!! Choro-gon Breath. Its a bullet hell shoot 'em up video game, and the first official title to be based on the anime and manga series Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid. Which is available on steam via its Directors Cut release.

Kari Renae Rose

The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe

Eduardo Quezada

Vividlope, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, or Double Shake!

inkman_nico

I'm sure you've gotten plenty of requests to make this a Vs video, but Pizza Tower would be a game I think you'd genuinely enjoy

Bored_Man

Would you do co-star/guest spotlights? Like not only getting recommends from us but say Elliot or Uncle say "play X" and discuss your thoughts on the title between a newbie and engrained - like how commentary on SGB goes but 1:1

Miideiros

The Ys series is a niche but long running action adventure series going back to the 1980s and of those games I think Ys Origin would fit in with the time limit, and if you like it there's a whole series waiting.

Odysseyknight

Heavy recommendation for Rhythm Doctor and A Dance of Fire and Ice. Very good rhythm games with extremely unique concepts that focus deep on genuine rhythm.

Cane Aubright

I’d say play katana zero or Your Only Move Is Hustle

sharperwhisper9

I'd like to see a Spotlight for Billie Bust Up, an upcoming Indie Platformer that involves Boss Fights played to Villainous musical numbers. The songs are written by Daniel Ingram of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic fame, and the game is in pretty steady development since it was funded on Kickstarter a few years ago. If you contact the developer, I'm sure they can hook you up with a demo.

Jacob Tucker

Persona 5 Royal

Katashi

Oh I have a few in mind at the top of my head. Like Transformers War for Cybertron, TMNT Shredders Revenge, probably any of the Halo games. I'd honestly love a Johnny Vs. Of the Halo series to be perfectly frank.

pcodymatt

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk for sure

Alex James

I have one more suggestion. it's only got a demo right now for q couple boss fights but Billie Bust Up is a GREAT musical platformer ^^

Johnny Aury Craig

Can’t think of any short games, so I’ll say Cross Code

Jeremy Readinger

Nicktoons Unite

Alluke

God of War (2005). I feel like that game is perfect for you to review, it has depth, but can also be played/reviewed in a more straightforward fashion, so you don't feel pressured to burning yourself out over it.

Faded

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk

Payday

I would love to Suggest Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons

Iyzeekiil

He did a playthrough on SGB but nothing on any of the followups

Johnny Aury Craig

I would like to suggest Gravity Circuit.I personally have only played the first Mega Man X and still genuinely enjoy this game ,so I feel you would enjoy it too

The Loyal Paladin

30XX (The sequel to 20XX). Game just came out a few weeks ago

Nintega2000

Sorry I should have replied to my own thing lol.

Zeronian Entity

Ps1 looking platformer indie title

Zeronian Entity

Psudoregalia

Zeronian Entity

I've got two options I think. One is Vernal Edge, a fun hack and slash metroidvania that deserves more love. The other is Gravity Circuit, which is more a Megaman X meets Ninja Gaiden

Johnny Aury Craig

Turbo Overkill, Hi Fi Rush, Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons, Supplice, Gal Guardians: Demon Purge. Those would be my suggestions

Mediocre Panda

How about elder scrolls Skyrim? Lol

William

spiritfarer https://store.steampowered.com/app/972660/Spiritfarer_Farewell_Edition/

Tom Brew

P-06 now that it has every level.

Chris Reid

Hi Fi Rush would be a cool one to see for a Spotlight.

TevyBear

I don't remember if you already did one a couple of years back but I would love to see a spotlight on one of the Spark the Electric Jester games.

Driff

Frogun - excellent PS1 style platformer. It is both a collectathon and a speedrun-focused game

RedLuigi64

I have a couple of quick, Indie games I recommend checking out for Spotlight. Platformers: - Lunistice - Lil Gator Game - Boti: Byteland Overclocked (15th September) - Gravity Circuit Roguelite (bare with me): - Cursed to Golf All of them are pretty new, except for Cursed to Golf which is now 1 years old. Nevertheless, I am sure you already have a hefty list of suggestions from others so I understand if you miss this. Best of luck

Mubar

A Short Hike - perfect for spotlight because it's bite-sized (whole game lasts about 2 hours)

RedLuigi64

Really obscure indie game called Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne.

True Tactician

I'd say try out Pseudoregalia, a Super Mario 64 inspired 3D Metroidvania. It's on Steam.

Isaac “Otaku de Carnitas” Diaz

An indie game that I think would be fun to see a spotlight on is One Finger Death Punch. It's a beat em up style game where you're only inputs are left and right mouse click and you have to fight your way through hordes of enemies with various conditions. It's very simple but addictive.

IanBough

Armored Core 6 would be really neat!

KingdomAce

Steamworld Dig is a game that's beatable in 4 hours and I think it'd be a fun little experience. I also really wanna say Steamworld Heist, it's a Startegy RPG game that's broken up into Missions, so I think it would fit pretty well into playing for however long you feel. I find it very easy to pick up and put down and I just really would love to see your thoughts on it.

Pixelator Gadzy

You should try out Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, it's a new game that came out with the composer of Sonic Rush and Jet Set Radio contributing to it

Filia-days

A game you can beat in a couple hours? Might I recommend a horror indie title I platinumed a couple months ago by Spanish studio Tequila Works called "Gylt". It was originally released on the ill fated Stadia but was just given new life and re-released on ALL modern platforms, giving it the proper chance at an audience it deserved. With inspiration clearly taken from the likes of Alan Wake and Silent Hill but in a more "childfriendly" perspective, even though it deals with themes like bullying, it is a very fun and charming little title. It's had mixed reviews, but while a bit rough around the edges, I don't agree with them.

MegaHiro91

Super Crush KO. It's kind of like a 2D Bayonetta, with a lo-fi neon anime aesthetic, where you're battling hordes of enemies (trying to maintain as long of a combo streak as possible to get good ranks), all to save your kidnapped kitten (yeah the game doesn't take itself too seriously). Plus the main character looks like Makoto (Sailor Jupiter) from Sailor Moon (and I heard you say she's your favorite Sailor Scout).

TheAnimationAnalyst

Card Shark from Developer Nerial

Alan501

Rayman Legends. Rayman is a series that I think hoes excellent with your taste in videogames.

b612gonzalo

Wrestlequest just came out and it really mixes wrestling with rpg gameplay

Vangjel Gjergo

always gonna recommend Nuclear Throne, a very fast paced roguelite

chatotalks

How about Sly Cooper?

Tabreez Siddique

I would like to suggest Doki Doki Literature Club Plus. It's a game that I feel gets overlooked nowadays beacuse of all the memes, but it is actually a very enjoyable psychological horror visual novel masked as a dating sim. Plus even has more content! I have a unique soft spot for this game beacuse it's one of two that led me to meeting my two best friends along with Symphony of the Night. (You might wanna give a content warning at the beginning of the stream though, it has some heavy and dark themes such as depression and self harm, just wanna be safe after all.)

Retro64

Lost Eidolons a recently released strategy rpg on the indie scene that was inspired by fire emblem, but actually adds new things to the formula and evolves it

Taylor

Since you just played through the entire Devil May Cry series I was thinking you might be interested in Hi-Fi Rush. It's a fantastic game.

The GAG Reflex

I'd think signalis would be an interesting game to look at for a spotlight, considering it's gameplay is very heavily inspired by old resident evil and it was really fun

gwenarmpits

gonna recommend 2 Killer7 because from my knowledge I don't think you've played it (though I could be wrong) and I think it could make for good conversation. like first level is the test if you'll be willing to stand the madness Bully (or Canis Canem Edit in Europe) while it is a game from Rockstar it's not as massive as say something like San Andreas or Red Dead Redemption 2. it's personally my favorite game of all time and I think it'd be a good time

EMCMend

Hmm.. my recommendation is very basic but ULTRAKILL, a very fast paced shooter where you gotta play aggressive to survive, and with a graphical style like old PS1 games.

Freelancer Marcy

Infinity Strash: Dragon Quest The Adventure of Dai comes out in a month. It's an adaptation of the recent anime which i personally loved and recommend highly

RHKJ No9tro

Pizza Tower was the first game that came to mind. Followed by Sonic Smackdown

SpiderKnife

Pizza Tower! It's been one of fav releases all year and 2023 has been so nuts for video games

EdandEin

Sea of Stars just came out, that looks like it might be up your alley

Jordan Colon

Annalynn. It's an indie game that is basically classic arcade Pac-Man if it was a 2D platformer. It's an arcade game at heart so it's great to just quickly pick up and play to try and get a new high score or whenever you feel like playing something but don't have anything specific in mind. The game controls great, has good replay value thanks to the unlockable skins, the music is fantastic, and it really nails that arcade game vibe

OrcinusOafish 153

My reccomendations are Blue Fire, Pizza Tower, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, Ape Out, Hi-Fi Rush, and for more puzzle/reading focused, Tangle Tower and Return of the Obra Dinn

ConiferSSR

Not sure if this would be “spotlight worthy” but recently someone made a mod that lets you use a controller for Sonic Free Riders, I’d like to see your reaction of that. If not that then probably pizza tower.

Woodlandbuckle

I think I'd love to see you Spotlight Slayers X. It's a modern take on the boomer shooter genre that's not super long, as many levels as a standard Doom episode. Good to see Spotlight back!

Mojo Lecrowe

Octopath Traveler 2 is still fairly recent and, while the game as a whole requires more of your standard several-dozen hours of gameplay, the individual eight stories can be completed in far less time, 5 to 10 hours, which is enough to know how the rest of the game is like. Highly recommend.

SayuriSRC

Luigi’s Mansion

JD Grawe

I was going to say Affogato, as it came out pretty recently, but the game is a little meaty with it's runtime... So Instead, I'll recommend The Legend of Dark Witch series. They're rather short platformers in the same vein as Megaman. Though the third one is still 3DS e-shop exclusive so... you might have to use devious methods to play that one.

PumpkinFox

Sonic Smackdown would be cool.

Fatboysmough

How about Exoprimal? A PVE dinosaur horde game by Capcom, if not maybe er...Spark the Electric jester?

GonicUK

Got a couple for ya Hi Fi Rush which is an awesome 3d rhythm fighter/platformer and is on gamepass! I recommend this one the most Oceanhorn 1 or 2. The first game being a tribute to 2d zelda and the second being classic 3d zelda All three fairly short being 8 hours or less I'd say

SomecallmeTim

Some Sports Game. Like Madden or 2k. Or the new Fnaf

JD Grawe

A game that I would like to hear your thoughts on is Gravity Circuit. Its a mega man inspired 2D pixel art game that can be beaten in one seating. I really like the game and I'm curious where you would fall on it.

Roamy Camilo

I don’t know if it counts but I’d love to see a round 2 for Cuphead and the Delicious Last Course

Richie Inkwell

If multiplayer games are okay, I’ve heard Friends vs Friends (card/shooter hybrid game) is really good to play Otherwise I’ll suggest Sparky the Electric Jester 2 and/or 3 since the first one already got a spotlight

UnoriginalUno

May I recommend Hi-Fi Rush? It's a hack-and-slash "character-action" game like DMC or Bayonetta, except everything you do is tied to the Rhythm of the music, with you getting rewarded for properly timing your attacks. It's a fucking phenomenal game, which made it getting shadow-dropped on a random day in January a helluva disservice.

Lone Otaku

Honestly, I saw Johnny is long overdue for a Spotlight video on "Sonic Smackdown"

SonicMania2099

I would really like to know your thoughts on Cozy Grove or Spiritfarer! They are really relaxing so it'll be a nice break in between intense games. Here are the steam links! https://store.steampowered.com/app/1458100/Cozy_Grove/ https://store.steampowered.com/app/972660/Spiritfarer_Farewell_Edition/

GhostlyMusic101

I know it's made by a bigger studio but I want more people to play octopath 2 (has a free demo on steam for any character's chapter 1) or an y's game. Octopath 2 i want more people to experience as just a great JRPG and has imo the best ost of 2023 and Y's is a series that gets overlooked by so many people I've noticed and the person who does the y's music also did x5's ost and a few of the zero games.

LupuFox

If any of the crew is ever interested in a puzzle game demo for Spotlight, Paper Trail.

Michael Kelly

Would love to see you talk about some roguelike games either Risk of Rain 2, Gunfire Reborn or for more of a doomlike Ultrakill

AquaticDreamer

It’s a few years old at this point, but Inscryption could be a really fun game to Spotlight if you haven’t already played it

Scott Shanbom

Little Noah: Scion of Paradise. A lovely Rouge-like with a cute artstyle, plenty of variations on how you can play and you CAN PLAY AS A CAT IN THE NEWEST UPDATE

Akarui Sora (SKB99)

Are multiplayer games on the table? Because if so I'd recommend Omega Strikers! It's a F2P 3v3 competitive game that's basically air hockey with superpowers. I play it all the time and it's always a fun time with friends!

JCPrime404

What about project 06? If that's out of the question then I'd recommend my favorite video game ever Dot Hack GU Last Recode. If you don't have access then might I recommend your thoughts on Sonic Superstars. I'd also recommend some rare underrated titles like tail concerto on PS1 or Solatorobo red the Hunter on DS. If all of that fails then how about a round two on the Sonic Adventure series or Shadow the Hedgehog since it's been a few years.

Heather McKnight

Pizza Tower

Emily Evans

This is a long shot because of the whole Metroidvania thing, but a shorter one I'd like to see is Touhou Luna Nights, a fangame of those anime girl bullet hells some circles of the internet won't shut up about (myself included) It's got a time stopping knife throwing maid who works for a vampire and if that's not enough I don't know what it. Regardless of if it happens or not I'm just happy to throw that out there.

RandoTheGameGuy

I think a spotlight on Vampire Survivors would be fun to see you do.

Simmal

Omega Strikers is a fairly new game that I’ve been enjoying a lot recently. It’s a 3v3 game that I describe as “Pong on steroids”. I think it’d be a simple game to spotlight, there’s not a massive storyline or campaign to complete at least.

Infielder Seth

I would probably recommend Bomb Rush Cyberfunk. It's a spiritual successor to JSR and one I've had a blast playing. It is $40 and I understand people saying it's a bit overpriced, but it's a good 8 hours.

Stardust Chaos

If you are willing to take a shameless plug from someone making an indie game, I’m making an Ace Attorney inspired indie game called Paper Perjury with a demo on steam of the first case and half of the second case. If I can provide another indie game on steam I’m not involved in, 8 Bit Adventures 2 is the best RPG I played this year. It has combat inspired by FF10 and Chrono Trigger and you have said you like both games.

James Acosta

If you want something recent. Sea of Stars might be worth a look. You'd have a lot of fun with the Ori games too.

GameBearAdvance(Benji)

There's a fun Monty Python inspired indie game that just released called En Garde! It's super fun and charming as hell. Also fairly cheap.

Ross from Command Prompt Gaming

Power wash Simulator for that final fantasy update 🤣

Jamie Dosdale

SUPER MONKEY BALL!

Jaceon

Maybe Hi-Fi Rush, given you just got done with DMC?

DarkWingSpartan

Also if you explain in the video I do apologize I am studying at school can’t watch at the moment

david alicea

Hi Fi Rush. Since you finished Devil May Cry, why not try another hack and slash game but with music and great visuals.

Tank1319

There isn’t a lot of games I can recommend at the moment. What’s the rules of spotlight again besides the obvious?

david alicea

Super Robot Wars V is my suggestion

Harrou Ord

Why must you take away the option of the creativity of Hentai games Play uhhh Dragon Quest Builders

N8

I've recently been playing Lunistice and Pseudoregalia. They're both 3D schmoovement platformers, but Lunistice is setup like a Sonic game with zones and acts, while Lunistice is more of a Metroidvania that promotes advanced movement techniques.

Steve Rothlisberger

Baldur’s Gate III, as an outsider, def wanna know whether or not it’s worth the hype and acclaim it’s been getting

Mike Weissman

Hmm...well, J's Reviews spoke about the Sonic 06 mods that basically made the game better, I wonder if you'd consider trying that out? You probably have already, since you're a sonic fan, but it would a cool full circle moment of when you reviewed the original years ago.

Gabriel Davila

I would recommend Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling. It's a spiritual successor to the classic Paper Mario series, before Super Paper Mario. I would love to see this game get some love. There is a demo available if you're curious.
