Cindy's Rescue (3): Joy

"What... the... Hell..."
Joy couldn't believe her eyes and she covered her mouth with her left hand. The failed attempt to move her right arm sent a sharp pain shooting through her broken arm, making her wince involuntarily. A white fiberglass cast had been wrapped around her arm from armpit to palm, so all she could do was wiggle their fingers. But the very next moment she had forgotten the pain, because what she saw almost took her breath away.
Her friend Cindy was sitting in a wheelchair in front of her, as stiff as a modern statue, wrapped in a pile of pink fiberglass casts. Only Cindy's face, her brunette hair and the five toes of her casted left foot peeked out from between the pink plaster casts.
Joy's eyes widened in surprise and ran in disbelief over Cindy's Minerva cast, which encased her head, leaving only her face and hair exposed at the back. This cast continued in one piece with a Velpeau cast that connected her right arm to her torso and left shoulder cast, with her arm bent 90 degrees in an upright position. The cast was continued as a double hip spica cast, which seemed to cradle her buttocks and extended to both of her legs. The left one protruded straight forward and the right one was bent at the knee. All fingers and five of her toes were enclosed except for the toes of her left foot.
It wasn't as if Joy had never seen Cindy in a cast before. When they were both in college, for example, Cindy had a cast on her right arm. And to be honest, she had expected to see Cindy in a cast of some kind. Simply because Cindy was just the kind of person who constantly had to tempt her fate. But the view that presented itself to Joy here exceeded all her wildest expectations.
Since Joy had gotten the job she had dreamed of in another city, Joy had largely lost contact with Cindy in recent years. Oh yes, Joy loved her job. And she loved doing it conscientiously and excellently. Vacations were almost a foreign concept to her. But recently... well... she got a vacation. Well, at least a kind of vacation, because she fell down the stairs in her office and broke the ulna and radius of her right arm. So now she was on sick leave and suddenly had a lot of time on her hands. Time in which she realized that she had neglected her friendship with Cindy. So she wanted to surprise her best friend Cindy with a visit and... well... with her own arm in a cast. She had purposely not contacted her beforehand and had driven to Cindy's last known address. Unfortunately, no one answered Joy's doorbell, but since Cindy's name was still on the nameplate on the door, Joy had waited for an hour. When there was still no sign of Cindy, she had decided to give up her surprise and call her old friend.
It had been so good to hear Cindy's voice after such a long time. But something seemed wrong. Joy just sensed that something was wrong. It was as if Cindy was trying to hide something from her, especially about her own physical condition. And if there was anyone who could tell, it was Joy, because there was no one who knew Cindy better than she did. After all, in the end Cindy came up with a new address. Joy should have been suspicious when Cindy asked her to meet her "prepared".
Well... She obviously meant that Joy should be prepared to find Cindy in a big house with her forehead plastered to her toes. Almost everywhere Joy looked, pink fiberglass bandages traced Cindy's athletic figure. The uncasted toes of her left foot, sticking out of the full body cast like a defiant tiny wall, seemed to curl in shame. There were two other women in Cindy's room - and both looked as if they had been directly involved in Cindy's last accident. One, a redhead with ocean blue eyes and a voluptuous figure, wore both legs in thick long walking casts and a bulky brace protruded from her chin to her stomach making her stand completely upright. She stood quite stiffly next to Cindy's wheelchair with her hands folded. The other woman, with bright hair and watery blue eyes, sat somewhat sullenly in her own wheelchair and had obviously broken both her arms and legs. She rubbed her plastered arms over the cast covering both her thighs.
"Joy? Is that you?" Cindy's cheeks reddened at the sight of her old friend, making them darker than the pink bandage around her head. "What... What happened to you? Your arm is in plaster!"
Joy frowned at Cindy's question, which was muffled by the head cast. Cindy was in a tight damn full body cast and seemed to be making such a drama about Joy's more than harmless casted arm in comparison.
"My explanation can wait, but what about yours, Cindy? What happened? I thought... And I hoped you had stopped being reckless and doing crazy stunts." Joy walked up to Cindy and put her healthy hand on her plastered shoulder.
"Well, to be honest, she hasn't been that reckless lately," the woman with the red hair said.
"Holy shit! Who are you guys? You're wearing casts too? I beg your pardon? Are you... accident prone like Cindy? Or are you some kind of fetish group?" Joy's eyes narrowed into slits. "Don't you dare include Cindy in your group!"
Joy shivered a little as she said this, and the trembling transferred through her hand to Cindy's casted shoulder, which was so broken that even the slightest shake caused Cindy discomfort. She grimaced in pain and when Joy noticed, she took her hand away, startled. "I'm sorry, Cindy. I didn't know you were in so much pain."
"It's all right Joy!" Cindy said between clenched teeth, causing Joy to furrow her brow. "Please calm down first. This lady is Dr. Laura and the one standing here is our excellent nurse Polly. They are friends of mine. And it's not what you think."
Dr. Laura smiled secretly when she heard this and cast a furtive glance at Polly, who smiled back with a wink.
It was as if Polly was saying, "Well, most of it is true, but I'm only wearing this left cast and back brace for fun." But both Joy and Cindy didn't notice these looks.
"Sit down, Joy. I'll explain it to you! But you have to promise not to freak out first." Cindy gestured to a chair with her eyes.
"We'll wait in the other room so you can talk in peace," Dr. Laura said, looking at Polly and nodded towards the door.
"Ah, okay!" Polly grabbed Laura's wheelchair and pushed it out of the room, limping without being able to bend her ankles and knees.
"So, where do you want me to start, Joy? Ahem..." Cindy twitched briefly, as if to tap a finger thoughtfully against her chin. But her full body cast didn't give her a chance to make that move.
"Stop being evasive, Cindy. Let me ask you something first. Are those real casts? And the casts on the two ladies, are they real too?"
"Of course, they're all real! You saw how I was in pain earlier, didn't you? And the casts on the two ladies are real too. Wait, why would I let them put me in this full body cast when my bones are healthy?"
"I don't know. You've been in casts almost non-stop since high school. That's why I've sometimes wondered if you like wearing casts."
"Why would I? I mean, why would anyone like wearing a cast?" Astonished, Cindy looked at Joy and there was so much honesty in her gaze that Joy sighed as Cindy groaned, trying to move in that immobile state.
"I... I'm sorry, Cindy. I assumed... Oh... Never mind! Forget it! Let's talk about what happened to you."
"Okay, Joy. It's been a long story since we last met..."
