I quite like the small processors and the challenges of squeezing their limits with tight assembler.

Since you were asking about modern mircocontrollers during the stream: I would suggest to get used to a modern 32 bit architecture like RISC-V or ARM. I see no sense in learning the details of yet another obscure 8-bit architecture for getting a job done. If you want to do it for the fun of it, good, go for it. I also played a bit with the Padauk devices. Nice, but it makes no difference if I pay 3 cents or 30 cents for one microcontroller, I do not plan to sell millions of devices. And: Glad that you liked the PICs, but the processor architecture is dated and sub-optimal, e.g., for implementing your code in C, needless hurdles nowadays. Currently, I find the CH32V003 or CH32X033 very attractive: 32 bit RISC-V, useful peripherals, open development system, internal oscillator available, run with both 3.3 and 5V (actually 2.0-5.5V), easy to solder by hand, cheap programming hardware available (WCH-LinkE). The CH32X033/CH32X035 even offer USB connectivity (and PD control). And they are still very cheap, even just on AliExpress directly from WCH.
