2023-09-19 08:10:48 +0000 UTCnow i'm not a lawyer, nor an expert on the field, so please forgive me, if i make some mistakes, but, and i'm not sure if someone mentioned this to you before, but the south park creator's are/were in a bit of hot water because of these two specials. you see, hbo acquired exclusive streaming rights for all past and present seasons of the show. however, just as stan explained to randy last episode about them not simply letting themselves be confined to working for one "streaming service", south park made an additonal deal with paramount to create several tv specials for them, including these two. now hbo argues that that breaches contract - which is debatable, as hbo only has the rights to stream all of south park seasons and these special are standalones that aren't really part of any season per se-, but it also cuts into development time for the current seasons, which came up a few episodes shorts (although south park argues that each of the pandemic special episodes, who are officially part of season 24 are double length, so technically count as two episodes each, balancing out the count). paramount of course denies these claims. now, i haven't really paid enough attention to it all to know how the whole thing ended, but it's once again a brilliant example of legal loopholes and companies screwing each other over.
