okay, this episode. first let me fix some potential misconceptions about grantz. it is once again not made very clear in the anime, but grantz is actually part of a replacement unit and not one of tanya's regular soldiers. tanya's unit were given the task of training a bunch of new recruits while still stationed on the front line. "to help knock some sense into them" was the reason given, seeing as most new recruits were far too cocky going into battle. after sobering them up during an exercise where two of the trainees died, one of tanya's regulars got injured and declared unfit for duty, so he got replaced by grantz. this is actually the first time he saw actual battle and of course he gets send smack dab into one of the most intense situations in modern warfare. i don't say i agree with his behaviour, but given the circumstances it is understandable.
furthermore, it's important to understand just how much of a big deal the whole situation actually is. the novels make it very clear that this is basically the first urban battle in their version of modern history. no one tried it before due to treaties prohibiting fighting in populated areas. tactical hq and tanya just managed to find a loophole to exploit. the novels also focus more and go much more into detail about the tenseness and the dread leading up to the actual attack, whereas the anime focuses more on the attack itself. regardless, this is surely a moment that will go down in infamy in their world.
