Coloring Book Pages + Secret Sketches
Added 2022-01-31 14:38:43 +0000 UTCHappy Monday January 31st! For me, it felt like a long and rewarding month. Did it last a while for you too? I saw a post that said something like "January feels like forever, then February flies by, then comes March, April, then Summer and basically it's already over. Happy 2023" which made me equally horrified and entertained.
This is a smaller post, but I wanted to say goodbye to January with you via this little secret sketches post. I gave a short description of each in gallery view, but I'll just touch on a few things here:
The coloring book pages for Mushroom Rain were something that the publicist suggested to promote the book for kids. They will be available to print via the Sleeping Bear press website once they have added the necessary copy to the pages. I just sent them over for approval. They were something I was admittedly putting off and dreading (linework based on my already-done lineless picture book illustrations? no thanks) but I ended up having a blast with. It reminded me of some of the tattoo illustrations I have done in the past. I also cannot resist drawing a mushroom, so it was a ton of fun after all.
The portrait is a small project that my agent presented to me--a three-week turnaround, and I'm happy to take shorter jobs! They actually excite me the most. Rebel Girls is wanting to work with my agency a lot apparently, and they are picking specific artists to fit the overall vibe of the people featured in the publication. I think a wildlife photographer was right up my alley! I'm looking forward to working on the final.
I've got some cover reveals coming up over the course of the next couple weeks (three!) as well as a youtube studio vlog coming within the week. I'm also thinking of doing some more interviews with art friends here, and I'll be looking to you guys for questions you are curious about. I am excited to share everything with you guys! I'm actually feeling very happy to be back to work, officially.

I don’t know what it is about the notebook page but it just seems to tap into a part of my brain that sparks a very specific sense of joy. I keep coming back to look at it

I think a lot of people don't understand how draining (and also conflicting) that experience can be. Like you want to be appreciative of all the work you're getting, but you can't avoid the fact that having so much work is mentally taxing, and takes away from your own personal projects. Sending you love and peace in any inkling of a break you get!!

I have so much client work that it's been hard to put out my own work. I have been struggling with updating my Instagram feed and also producing artwork. The work excites me and I'm glad it's consistent, but man, I miss my own projects. I'd eventually like to create a graphic novel of my own.

Raw mushrooms are not great unless maybe chopped up in a salad...but I hope you take a bite of a cooked mushroom soon and think of the mouse still. ;o)

2022-01-31 19:04:53 +0000 UTCI fell in love with mushroom labyrinth, definitely gonna print it for my kiddo. As for January - for me it was extremely quick, but in a weird way. Here in Russia our main holiday activities for new year celebration are actually New Year’s Eve and 10 days of national holiday after. Yeah, we know how to party 😂 so these 10 days were full of family and friend quality time (vaxed and all that ofc). Then I plunged into work mode buuuuut 10 days after I was hit with a quarantine brick right into my face. We are safe, but a kiddo from my son’s daycare group tested positive and we went into 10 days survival mode of quarantine when I tried to work and entertain 5yo. So was it a long month? Hell yeah it was. Was it productive work wise? Fuck no (but still I did my best and I am proud).

I really enjoy having your videos on to keep me company while I work, or on a sunday morning chilling in the couch with the cats, so good, 5 stars <3 Also, I see that lil mouse sir just munching away happily on that mushroom boy, and I'm like "I wanna eat that" It just looks soft and crumby. I don't think raw mushroom is very good, mind you, but it just looks...very munchable. Lots of love, take it easy <3

We actually had friends over for the first week which was amazing and fun but after that it was just chill commission work, we didn't go out or see anyone, and it was really freaking nice haha
