January *✲⋆.Secret Sketches*✲⋆. Batch #1

As previously mentioned, I'll be releasing these sketches in small batches throughout the month (as I do them). Here are some spreads from my sketchbook that I did throughout December. Materials used on these pages varied greatly and kept things fresh and fun for me, including:

pilot V5 pen, blackwing graphite pencil, my small koi watercolor set, midliner highlighters, posca markers and micron pens

Unlike my last few sketchbooks, this one is larger (7 x 10 in.) and I am completing it in chronological order. I would normally skip around to random pages, but I wanted this one to be like a story of my winter from start to finish. As always, there are short captions on each image as you scroll through!

As a side note, this month's step-by-step will be up closer to the middle of the month and will be a traditional media piece! It's long overdue.

Please enjoy, and I'll see you real soon :~)

Hey Sonya, great question! In all honesty, it's a little difficult for me to figure out exactly how I do this. At times, the same thing happens to me (I realize I'm drawing realistically and without stylization). I think both is okay, and the more you practice realism, the better "visual vocabulary" you have for when you want to stylize things/people. I think of stylizing my sketches as abbreviation--taking something and making it less complex (Not caring too much if the angles match up, or if the circle is at the correct perspective, etc.) Practice is key, just keep drawing as often as you can and eventually a sketching style will come like second nature!

i love your tiny bear Woozi haha. And I keep coming back to BEER TIME, the colors you chose and the way you laid it out is so enticing

I love how free and loose your sketches always look 😍

Charlie

Yeah, on the caption below the image (in gallery view) it says it was from his recent livestream concert! And yes, that's exactly the feeling except imagine that all of the plans that you had for that final month got snatched away--that's what happened with us due to Covid :')

god i love going through sketchbooks, they are so inspiring! totally have to draw more in mine more, too. might be a dumb question but is there any affirmation for like, not to focus on how things actually should look? e.g. i always end up drawing things too anatomically right and it takes out all the fun 🙃 p.s. new patron here! super happy to join, thank you for sharing you art 💖

Sonya Lis

I think sketchbooks are my biggest crush when it comes to art. I just love them. Thank you for sharing. 🥰

Jana

I love the Andrew Bird page and the page about missing your roommates. Did you just draw that while watching a live performance online? I know how it feels to miss the people you went to school with. I feel like my senior thesis took up all my time and energy. Then I got like 1 glorious month of freetime when it was done to actually see all my friends and we had such a blast then one by one everyone went separate ways. The feels man. Right in the feels.

the page about missing old roommates put a couple tears in my eyes :'-) your sketches always feel so fresh and so very genuine. thank you for sharing!!

I saw a small Ashitaka from Mononoke Hime and I'm very happy he's there. Also Andrew, always a hit, thank you for sharing!!

Hmm yeah I get that, knowing the feeling of leaving college and all your friends being in different places is hard enough, I can't imagine what it feels like having the same experience but cut short. And cool ty!!!

I really don't know if I miss Florida at all, or leaving it behind by choice to move somewhere else. I will never go back to Florida if I can help it. I think what impacts me more is the fact that we did not have any closure when leaving Ringling. And the fact that there are still some people in my life (including my partner) that I have very distinct memories with from Ringling, but now we're all in these different environments and it feels...strange. Anywho--I don't mind the paper, but it's not super high quality!

Jamie Green

really love the page about florida, i've been feeling the same about moving! do you like the paper in this new sketchbook?
