Joe Bob’s Thought of the Day: Half-Penny Edition

I was buying gas today and I thought it was $3.89 a gallon, then I noticed that it was actually $3.89 and nine mills per gallon, so I decided not to fill up. They were trying to trick me into thinking it was $3.89 when it was truly almost $3.90. They were charging an extra nine mills. Since the last time the federal government issued a half-penny (five mills) was 1857, I have a question: WHAT THE FUCK?

Doesn't bother me since I've used public transportation my whole life. So nice taking the train and subway to L.A. since I'm just east of L.A. County.

Because people will buy more if it's $0.99 versus $1.00. This has been shown.

Time to start cutting coins again.

It’s the same rational for charging $XX.99. It just looks cheaper. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Someone has to ginsu knife pennies into strips, I'd imagine. 😄

I'm sure those "poor" gas companies are just trying to save millipennies however they can, just like the rest of us. High gas prices are hard for us, but low gas prices are even harder for them. 🥺😢🙄

I've always found it strange that the sales tax isn't included in the price you see over there. And I thought us Brits were weird! (Well yeah, we are 😂)

A gallon of diesel is $8.20 here in germany. Prices are insane. Also: Same thing with the mills here!

It does make me wonder what would happen if someone bought exactly one litre of petrol and then started demanding their 0.001p change. I could see it happening.

I always hated that! You go to Europe and they add the sales tax into the prices of everything. Why can’t they do that here and just put sales tax included so people don’t think they are hiking the price tag up.

I believe federal income tax was suppose to be a temporary thing too to pay for the war effort during WWII….but I guess it was just too darn popular lol

Same as stores pricing something at $3.99 instead of $4.00

I’d like exact change please

That’s how Big Oil rolls you know that🤷‍♂️🤣🤣🤣

Someone owes us some money, or an explanation... I'll take the money

Huh. I always assumed it was just the local tax for roads. Joe Bob made me Google that Fucker! and learn something today! “The practice of tacking 9/10 of a cent on the end of a gas price goes back to when gas cost only pennies per gallon and was a tax imposed by state and federal governments. Gas stations added the fraction of a cent on the end of the price instead of rounding up the price. Back then, a full penny would have been a budget-buster for customers. The federal tax was implemented in 1932 as part of the Revenue Act of 1932 and was supposed to expire in 1934 — except it never did.”
