Subsonic Sabot Flechettes - Awesome performance
Added 2022-03-08 05:10:26 +0000 UTCWe test another design by Alexey Lavrov. You might recognized the dart but the sabots are a new design. I used a really light powder load of only 10 grains for these, and mostly kept the velocities below 1000 fps. (I was really nervous about destroying these by pushing them too hard) Even though these were "slow" you won't believe what one of these did to the lead plate!

2022-03-09 02:12:32 +0000 UTCThe terminal ballistic performance was surprisingly good for both the penetrating and expanding rounds, given that only 10 grains of powder were used resulting in subsonic velocities. It makes me wonder what the performance would be like if the same design was CNC machined from solid brass (or cast brass for production rounds), with a solid base and a shot cup designed to accelerate the projectiles without damage, and 20+ grains of powder for supersonic velocities with an exponential bump in kinetic energy. I love the TAOFLEDERMAUS channel because you guys are doing the experiments I'd like to do. I'm a hoplophilic engineer with a lot of reloading equipment and I've done many wacky ballistic experiments in the past, but none lately. Thanks for these practical lessons on the lunatic fringe edge of ballistic science.
