A theory on why it's easier to focus on the characters with circles than the one without is that the characters on both have a lot of noise to them. They're not very clean and crisp. So on the one without the background is very clean and crisp thanks to the water brush outlines which makes a very interesting negative shape that is engaging for the eye to explore. As a result that takes the focus off of the character. In contrast the other page has circles to fill in the negative space in a very pattern like way making that space not as interesting to explore. At least I feel when looking at them.
