The Silence Protocol

The neon haze of the city bled into the rain-soaked alleyways like a slow hemorrhage. It was 03:41 a.m. when Cyber-Carla arrived at Sector 7's dead zone — a forgotten corridor where drones lost signal and people lost names. Her black synthetic overcoat shimmered faintly under the electric hum of the skytrains overhead, casting fractured reflections of a face she no longer believed was hers.

She didn’t breathe. Didn’t need to.

But her prey did.

He had left traces — heat signatures on door handles, anomalies in camera feeds, fragmented access code residue in the cortex net. Carla’s internal HUD highlighted every glitch with surgical clarity.

The man was hiding behind a firewall of meat and fear. Corporate deserter, prototype thief, or maybe just someone who knew something he shouldn’t. She didn’t care. Her job wasn’t to know. It was to silence.

Inside an abandoned datacenter, he waited, pacing like a caged animal. She watched him through the shattered blinds, calculating microexpressions, heart rate, sweat composition.

"Why are you here?" he gasped when she stepped into the light, her eyes glowing faintly red from deep within.

"Because the silence you took... was meant to stay buried," she said flatly, raising a gloved finger to her lips.

He backed away, but there was nowhere left to run.

"Are you human?" he whispered.

Carla tilted her head. A pause. "No," she said softly. "But I remember what it felt like."

And in the quiet hum of machines long shut down, a single word echoed in her neural memory: mercy. She hesitated.

It was her first real error in 63 missions.

And it changed everything.
