You should definitely go see the concert if you can! That was one of the things I was most looking forward to, being surrounded by other bts fans in my area. It was so much fun and it definitely didn't feel like I was amongst strangers, everyone was open for a chat or just a knowing smile and I found out about and joined my local BTS fan club. The concert was just so good on the big screen and with big sound, it did really feel like I was there in person!

When I have to think of my favourite BTS song Spring Day always immediately comes to mind. I have very vivid memories of watching the MV for the first time and being blown away by how different it was to what I had come to expect from a popular music group (and at that point I had no idea about the deeper symbolism). It was like wow these guys are doing something very different and actually make incredible music with deep meaning that everyone can connect to. I still get this overwhelming feeling that's hard to describe as soon as I hear the song or watch the MV, it's not sadness but more like a far away sad memory and then I feel comforted and hopeful. It makes me think of lost childhood dreams.

Spring day, queen 💜

BTS’s political messaging has always been there from the beginning but it can easily be missed by international audiences and sometimes even Korean ones because of the thin line they have to skate on. Spring Day is a fav in South Korea (it won song of the year in numerous year end award shows and has never left the charts. It’s referred to as the Queen. ) The attention to detail in the MV’s have always been absolutely insane and why MV’s used to be looked at frame by frame. BTS normally built their sets by scratch so each item included was there for a purpose etc. Also a reminder for others that the short films are separate from the content of the Wing’s Solo’s. The wings short films are BU Easter eggs but also a lot of physical representations of the novel ‘Damien’ for example the figure on the wallpaper in Jin’s film is the visual representation of the god ‘Abraxes’ mentioned by Namjoon in the narration. And in the Graffiti in Tae’s scene. If you look it up in Google you will see that’s how Abraxes is normally depicted. The Eva that’s written on the queue cards in Jimin and Hobi’s films is in reference to the character Eva (mother figure in the book.) These are just a couple of the examples etc. The song quotes in the middle or towards the end of each film are all from BTS discography. In Jimin’s it’s ‘save me’ lyrics, in Tae’s it’s Whalen 52 etc. The subs were also incorrect in a couple of them… in Tae’s one it’s Sin’s not crime etc. The phrase on the mirror that Namjoon writes is that ‘we have to survive’ it is also shown in Jin’s short film as the lightening dims. The mother and child in Hobi’s also flashes in Tae’s eyes in his short film. The piano in Yoongi’s and Jimin and Jin’s. The chains from the phone booth also show up in the last short film around the wardrobe. As does JK’s painting. There’s quite a few more references etc but I can’t think of them off the top of my head. Coming back to BTS’s political messaging… The song ‘Am I wrong’ also made references to the political situations. Which was why k-army was so nervous when they performed it for the first time as it was still during that Govt. time. It’s specifically the line mentioning ‘Dog’s and Pigs’ in Yoongi’s verse. It refers to a comment made in 2016 by Na Hyang-Wook, a senior Education Ministry official in the govt of Park Geun-hye (It’s the same govt that mishandled and was in power during the Sewol Ferry Disaster… she got impeached eventually in 2017,) who said 90% of South Korean public is like dogs and pigs and that there should be an official caste system. ( Basically a social-class system) It was a majorly offensive, elitist comment and problematic, and showed how cut off those politicians were at that time and caused a huge scandal in South Korea. That’s why when you watch the performance next time you will see the boys crouch down in those dance moves that resemble dogs during the choreo. Bapssae (crowtits) that they bring up in Not Today and ‘Am I Wrong’ is also about the generational divide between the have’s and the have nots and the boomers and millennials. And is mentioned in the song Baepsae (well worth a deep dive too) Not Today lyrics saying if you can’t run, walk, if you can’t walk, crawl is a reference to a very famous Martin Luther King speech too. So it really is an empowering anthem. Back to the political messages of BTS songs… It’s really no understament when people talk about BTS potentially being blacklisted. After Park Gun Hye’s impeachment the details of the blacklist came out. That’s why when president Moon (left wing democratic) came into power BTS had a good relationship with him. It was his govt that appointed them Ambassadors etc. Keep in mind that same side of the political spectrum as Park Gun Hye (right wing, conservative) is in power now hence many speculated that military exemption would have been difficult to receive and to accept from that govt. The current president Yoon is under a lot of controversy too. I would also like to mention that Govt across the western world also have problems with corruption and media corroboration. The US under President T had problems… The Hillsbourgh disaster in the UK showed widespread corruption in the media and collusion with the police-force etc. So for people to bear that in mind. This livestream is also why I love BTS. Their songs can come with so much depth and meaning etc. 💜

This is my first time seeing this particular video explaining spring day. I saw some clips on YouTube that some students took while the ship started to sink. Some weren’t even scared bc they heard helicopter and believed they were going to be saved. It’s so heartbreaking how authorities didn’t even care about these kids. There’s a survivor who actually talked about her experience https://youtu.be/uT9m08FxYVg

I hope your hockey game went well!

Spring day is another one of my all time fav song. It has all the sad, nostalgic feeling. Bts kind of ended the busan concert with this song kind of like telling their short goodbyes for now and telling us to wait and miss you.

You seem really interested in the storyline, Max. Xceleste channel has great explanation of the storyline. Maybe after some more album reactions, you can watch that
