May 2021 Newsletter

A wise man once said that it is gonna be may. It's May. No longer will it gonna be May. Think about that for just a moment. Consider it.

This month's Game Studies Study Buddies was on Colin Milburn's Mondo Nano, a truly bizarre book of game studies that everyone should at least check out our episode on. From atomic cinema (by which we mean films made with atoms) to Second Life and the exploits of biolab amateur Perky Pat, Milburn demonstrates a whole lot of playful and scientific connections that make up our modern life. If you liked our episode on James Hans, there are a lot of connections to be made between that one and this one. Next month we're talking about Christopher Patterson's Open World Empire, so you should definitely subscribe to the show if you haven't already.

Too Much Future is on a break before we start Fallout New Vegas, but that means that you can spend your time digging into the new Mages & Murderdads season centered on Disco Elysium. The first, second, and third episodes are up already. We're doing the critical deep dive that you associate with our show, and we think you'll enjoy it a lot. It's a little odd compared to other games in the genre because so much analysis depends on the back third, but we think it's worth digging into right now. You can also always listen to Mages & Murderdads via RSS by clicking here.

Just King Things continues as it always does. We are 14.1% through Stephen King's oeuvre, meaning that we still have many years to go. You can celebrate this if you want, but it also means that we have to read books like his Danse Macabre, a truly bewildering nonfiction book on the horror genre that made CMRN unhappy and made Michael start screaming about "naturalism," whatever that is. If you like the episodes that go off the rails because we're bewildered by what Steve is doing, this one is for you.

If you're a $5/month subscriber or more, you can access our JKT BONUSODES by clicking here and listen to us talk about the Drew Barrymore vehicle Cat's Eye, which (shockingly) features a goblin.

Some additional information!

As you know, we are trying to get to 1,025 subscribers to begin our podcast on Homestuck. We've realized that it's hard to drive the general concept of "subscription," so we're defaulting back to that framework we all understand: money. As of today, our goalpost is $4,500 a month in support. If you want to up your support to get us there, you can do that! If you want to join at the $X a month level to get us there, you can do that! CMRN already began purchasing some important items for making this happen, and Michael has already created a schedule. The power is in your hands.

As always, thanks to all of you for your support, and we hope you enjoy what we're up to! Remember...do it for Steve...and also...the world where Steve lives.
