My Cage "Classic" 10/09/2009

Ok, so Bridget's sister Sara thoughts: The storyline came up in a round about way due to a conversation I had with a WAY more successful cartoonist than myself. I named her Sara after Cerberus. She isn't based on my actual sister-in-law, but is based on the best friend of a girl I dated in my 20's who HATED me.

I regret the story because of a girl online who had been a vocal fan of the strip writing about how she felt down because the only heavier female character in the strip being an awful person. In actuality, the reason she looks the way she does is because I told Mel to make the character a "female version of Norm". Still, I do see her point and did apologize.

Anyway, that's all my thoughts on this storyline. I don't think the character worked, and would not do this storyline over if I had it to do over.

Wow. That's very well put. Thx.

You're saying that your date's best friend, not your date, hated you, right?

I see nothing wrong with this storyline. I like to meet the main characters family.

Sorry you got burnt on this storyline, but I'm really enjoying it so far. (Especially today's strip!) If the only complaint you got was from someone who objected to Sara on account of her weight, I would've told her it was to visually distinguish her from Bridget, not to insult larger people. To me, the underlying point was Norm and Bridget both come from (seriously) dysfunctional families and see in each other some sort of normalcy/acceptance of who they are for themselves, warts and all.
