2024-09-23 23:39:56 +0000 UTCSadly, no. He has a very Trumpian personality, boastful and hyperbolic, and he would just talk in circles around or make up lies about anything he didn't understand. I AM grateful that my mom wasn't that far gone -- he dragged her with him into the Fox News bubble, but the nomination of Trump snapped her back out of it. We used to have those same arguments with her, but she became a staunch liberal activist! And him... Well, we don't have those arguments with him anymore. He's going through dementia and politics are beyond him now. Nowadays we spend all our energy trying to get him to eat meals and bathe, and we all just smile and nod at the boastful lies he tells because he can't remember what is and isn't true. I can't say I miss the old arguments, but it's wild to think how different he is from when we had that conversation four years ago.

2024-09-23 23:24:52 +0000 UTCI understand your frustration and on one level I'm right there with you and I'm not going to lament his death. But more importantly, assassinations are more than just murder, they are attacks upon the nation. We don't want assassination attempts to be normalized.

I hope you were able to take the opportunity to help him see the situations that he was involved in, and to see beyond the rhetoric crafted to manipulate the way we think and to empathetically apply how he felt making those choices to real people who are really regularly stripped of their humanity. I remember James Randi's response to a question about how to deal with loved ones that believe in woo: "Be kind." That doesn't mean don't hold people accountable for their actions and words. It also helps to understand that we all possess ideas that did not originate with us, which is why it is so important to scrutinize them, understand their implications (not always easy, especially when algorithms work to keep us in one lane), and see where they fit into who we are.

2024-09-23 00:37:11 +0000 UTCTrue story about being "anti-abortion": In 2020 my Fox-News-obsessed stepfather was arguing with my sister, who had said that her main issues are climate change, reproductive rights, and education reform, and Republicans are bad at all of those things, so she would never vote Republican. He tries to NotAllRepublicans her and says, "I don't hate abortions! Do you know how many abortions I, personally, have been involved with?" It's not actually relevant to the conversation so I tried to move on, but then he says, "Eight. I was just thinking the other day about how many kids I'd have if not for abortions!" EIGHT! I was REELING. That's when I fully understood how completely hypocritical these anti-abortion people are. He had told us all the usual sneering about how Planned Parenthood is eugenics and it's all just lazy birth control for people who can't think ahead, but he also has never in his life hesitated to get an abortion when he feels it would benefit HIM. It wasn't lazy and irresponsible when HE needs one. He projected HIS mentality of "We'll just get an abortion instead of using a condom!" on all the imaginary welfare queens out there. If abortion care would subsidize, EVERYONE would be as selfish and irresponsible as he was, and then the country would go broke! But it's different for him because he could afford it. So, yeah. All the people out there cheering for pro-life rhetoric would get an abortion in a heartbeat if they felt like it. It's not murder unless YOU do it.
