My Cage "Classic" 03/12/2009

What's the most expensive inexpensive thing you ever bought? Example: I bought a bag of popcorn once, chipped my tooth and paid $500 to get the tooth fixed. Also, my wife and I bought $1 store play baking set for my kids. My daughter broke our TV with the rolling pin, and my son clogged the toilet with the whisk.

Wow!

My Cage

I replaced a bathroom sink faucet. I had everything in place, with the compression fittings on the hot and cold water risers cleaned with new washers in place on the compression fittings, but I didn't have whatever tool it takes to squeeze the compression fittings together. So I called a plumber, explained the situation, ask specifically if they could come out and squeeze together the compression fittings. Plumber said, "Yes, we can do that." Plumber came out, looked, and said, 'Actually, we can't do that. Those old style compression fittings just aren't used anymore so we need to replace them with a new style, which will require new valves for the hot and cold water." This required shutting off the water mains, one of which broke in the process, and the other was discovered to be "slowly leaking" and also needed to be replaced. This required shutting off the main for the entire building... You see where this is going... Four valves, two water risers, various connecting lines, couplings and fittings, and three days without hot water later, I had my new bathroom faucet working - and a bill for a thousand-plus dollars. All because I didn't think it would be practical to buy a specialty tool to squeeze together compression fittings for one time use.
