3:30 a.m. my birthday in early August 1965. We were about to climb into a truck and drive 1700 miles to take my grandfather home to Missouri. I sat down on the curb to put on my shoes and watched the sun rise over the desert, shivering. It had been 110F the day before and right then it was 53F. I could see my breath.
