[EARLY VIDEO] Martin & Philip chat: the Big Switch

Hi everyone, as promised, here's a chat between myself and Philip Mallis about the Big Switch timetable! This video uses youtube's new collaboration feature which allows both our channel names to attach to the video.

Hope you enjoy it!

[EARLY VIDEO] Metro Tunnel Hot Takes

Hello everyone, remember how I predicted this video would be about 40 minutes? (I guessed that just based on word count)

As promised, this is my extended thoughts on the metro tunnel, taking a more critical eye than in previous videos, but also pointing out a bunch of things I really like. This was filmed in one day (except for a handful of additional shots, you can tell because it's cloudy in those), written over two days and edited over 5 days. Definitely a record for a video of this...

Taitset in 2026

Hello everyone, and happy new year! This post is a bit of a general update, and a look at what I'm expecting to do with the channel in 2026.

First of all, the channel will be reaching number of milestones this year: In December, the channel as a whole will be 20 years old. I don't really see this as '20 years of Taitset' given most of that time it was just a place I put my railfan videos, and nothing like what it has become today. But December also mar...

[EARLY VIDEO] Metro Tunnel Opening Day!

Hello everyone, I don't think this video needs much introduction. Opening day was a lot of fun, a lot more fun than I expected. I was there with only a few hours sleep (for the reason mentioned in the intro), and honestly I've never seen so much excitement about any transport or infrastructure project. Hope you enjoy it!

Also please note: if you watch with subtitles, there might be a couple of small issues with them until later tonight (placement etc), I'm still going through and ch...

November channel update

Hi everyone, just a quick update on how things are going:

October was probably a record for the channel with 4 videos uploaded. This isn't because I was working harder, more just the nature of those videos: the follow-up video was unscripted and had minimal graphics so only took a couple of days to produce, and the Schynige Platte video script was already mostly finished, and of course already photographed. November is likely to be the complete opposite, I'm not sure if anything will b...

[EARLY VIDEO] The Schynige Platte Bahn

Hello! Welcome to my second ever scripted international video, and the first one to be set in a not-predominantly-english speaking country. This video is unusual in that all the photography was done over 8 years ago, the last time I was out of the country. I actually wrote 95% of this script about a year ago, then sort of forgot about it.. I remembered recently, and it was a pretty straightforward process to finish it off. I'd love to get back to Europe again at some point, but it won't be ha...

A random follow-up video

Hello everyone, this video is just a follow-up to three videos from earlier in the year, namely the Clifton Hill derailment, the Sunshine superhub, and the replacement bus video.
This is unscripted, it's just me chatting for 37 minutes about some additional points that have since come to light in relation to those three videos. This will remain unlisted, it's not designed for normal circulation on youtube, but I will put a publicly visible link to it under each of the original videos. Enjo...

[EARLY VIDEO] Metro Tunnel opening plan

Hi everyone, here's a video I didn't know I was going to make! On Monday afternoon I got an email asking if I wanted to come to the premier's press conference on Tuesday morning, followed by another visit to State Library. Somehow I've managed to get this together in just two days since then! Hope you enjoy the coverage from Taitset Network News.

September channel update!

Hi everyone, things are moving along well in production land:

The Adelaide fleet video is finally at the editing stage. I started writing this video nearly 3 years ago, and almost gave up on it a few times. Even just a few weeks ago, I was feeling pretty uninspired by it.. but now that I'm starting to see it come together into an actual video, I've swung right around and think it's going to work really well. It's pretty long, somewhere around 38-40 minutes at this stag...

[EARLY VIDEO] The festival that trains make possible

Hi everyone, bit of a surprise video for you - I'd been thinking about making this for quite some time, but never mentioned it here because I wasn't really sure if it would happen. After getting more footage (and observations) from the recent 2025 edition of this festival, I managed to smash this one out pretty quickly.

Some of you may recognise a familiar face or two in this one!

Hope you enjoy it. :)

A very quick update

Hi everyone, just a super quick update:

Firstly, a big welcome to everyone who's signed up over the last couple of weeks, there's been quite a few of you since the Clifton Hill video! Welcome!

A week ago I was putting the final touches on the script for the Adelaide fleet video, and was getting really close to recording the voiceover - but then on Tuesday I came down with the flu (along with the rest of my family). I'm usually very quick to get my flu shot, but for some re...

[EARLY VIDEO] The Clifton Hill derailment

Hi everyone, this was not a video I was planning to make 10 days ago.. then an X'trap hit the dirt and my plans changed. This one was very much a collaboration with Alexander Jamieson, who lent his garden railway for filming again, and made a lot of observations on the incident.
I didn't really consider making a video about this when it first happened, and you might notice that I only took still images of the site. But then I started getting a lot of questions from non-rail friends, and re...

[EARLY VIDEO] I'm excited about this yellow Comeng

Hi everyone, this video covers an exciting new development in the Melbourne electric train enthusiasm scene. This was a lot of fun to put together, and required quite a few trips out west to get footage (including some where the train never turned up). Hope you enjoy it!

June channel update

Hi everyone, just a few little updates on how things are going at the moment!

The last month was a big one for the channel view-wise, with three pretty strong videos fairly close together (Town Hall & State Library/Bus Replacements/Sunshine SuperHub). Things were also helped along by Reece Martin from RMTransit uploading what is essentially an ad for my channel: For those that don't know, Reece has stopped making regular videos, but he's taking the time to promote ...

[EARLY VIDEO] New plan for Sunshine

Hi everyone, there was recently a plan put out for a rebuild of Sunshine station, and I quickly found myself making my own version to fill in the gaps that the official one doesn't explain. It's been a while since I've done a diagram-heavy video like this!

Fun fact: the pan shot to the freight train at 2:52 was completely unplanned, I was just filming the Comeng and heard it coming behind me!

Hope you enjoy it.

Just a random little bonus video

Hi everyone, the bus replacement video will be up later this week - in the meantime, here's a very random bonus video. Over the past weekend I was in Sydney and the Blue Mountains, shooting a lot of trains in wonderful scenery. This wasn't specifically for the channel and I was mostly taking stills, but thought I'd share this one shot with you. Transport Heritage NSW was running shuttles between Penrith and Valley Heights in the lower Blue Mountains, with steam loco 3526 and diesel-electric A...

April production update!

Hello everyone, a little update on what's been going on in video production land:

I've got two videos basically ready to go: One is another Metro Tunnel video, which is completely finished, but I'm just waiting on a thumbs up from my metro tunnel friends to proceed with it - so not sure on timeline for that, but hopefully you'll be seeing it some time soon. The second video (which will probably come out first) is the video about bus replacements I mentioned in the last...

[EARLY VIDEO] A video about Metros!

Hi everyone! As per my last update post, I haven't had much time to work on videos over the past ~3 weeks while helping one of my kids start school. However somewhere in all that I got the idea to make this one, and it came together relatively quickly. Thanks to Sharath and Maikha (both members here!) for some extra footage for this one.

Hope you enjoy it!

January Channel Update

Hi everyone, hope you've all had enjoyable holidays (for those who get them)! Time for a bit of a channel update:

I expect the next major video will be (finally) the Adelaide suburban fleet one.
I started writing this about 2 years ago after finishing the Melbourne one, and obviously I've been distracted several times since then - but it's something I'd really like to finish off, and I'm doing some work on it this afternoon. It's pretty detailed, so it's going to ...

[EARLY VIDEO] Surprise.. It's an animation!

Hello everyone, this is a short video - kind of a spin-off of the Werribee video, covering a few more interesting things about the G&MR. As I didn't take any photos at all between 1857 and 1860 when this story is set, I decided to draw the whole thing instead, which turned out to be quite fun. Hope you enjoy it!

[EARLY VIDEO] Werribee Christmas and a Williamstown New year!

Hi everyone - It's finally done! This has been by far the longest and most complex scripted video I've ever made and.. I'm pretty pleased with it.

As a special Christmas treat I'm giving you this one a whole 6 days early - I'll make it live to the public on the afternoon of New Years Eve. I'm planning on running it as a premiere then, (probably around 4pm AEDT for anyone cool enough to be heading out partying). Please note that once I set up the premiere I don't think you'll be able t...

December channel update

Hi everyone, and welcome to summer! (Or winter for my northern hemisphere viewers) Also a big hello to all the people who have signed up since the release of the 40,000 video, it caused quite a spike in new memberships - welcome aboard!

I was hoping to start this update off by saying I'd recorded the Werribee line voiceover and had begun the editing stage - however on literally the day I planned to do that, I started feeling unwell, and later tested positive to covid. Despite being up ...
