Since the Foundations series was already mentioned, I'll add AC Clarke's Rendezvous with Rama, it was beautifully imagined and described.

Farscape was pretty good. Torchwood, too. Especially the first three seasons. And I really liked the Warehouse13/Eureka universe. There was a good balance of drama and humor in all of them. I like Asimov's stuff too. But one thing I found ironic is he started the robot stories with the principle that robots were machines, like toasters, and we'd never create them without putting some safeguards in place; hence the Three Laws of Robotics. I don't know if he did it on purpose or not, but his robots eventually became the very threat he created the three laws to prevent. In the end they were running everything. Never create something that thinks faster than you do. In fact, never create anything that thinks.
