I was the first in my family to leave religion, and soon after one of my brothers also found his way out. Now, I look at my nieces and nephews, both from the siblings who are still religious and the atheist one, and it is clear that having someone in the family who openly dissented from the prevailing religious view is having impacts. Though, like you Julie, I wish it was having a greater impact. After my one brother left religion, his children immediately started to openly admit that they didn't find religion compelling either, much to the chagrin of their mother. One of his kids later came out trans (in Texas), and I cannot even imagine the distress and imposed sense of shame that would have befallen my nephew had he not been able to be open with his father and uncle (me), knowing that he wouldn't be judged, nor loved less. I hope, like you, that my other nieces and nephews know that they're "safe with us" should they ever need or want to express doubts about the religious dogmas that they been taught.

2023-09-11 23:29:42 +0000 UTCI've seen the dumbing down from my generation in my family to my nieces and nephews. I was the first person in my family to graduate from college. Out of us four kids, two have bachelor degrees (mine's English, too Tom) and two have some college. I'm the only one with a master's. ALL of my eight nieces and nephews have been Christian-style homeschooled. It shows in their vocabulary, their science denial, their politics, their floundering social naivety, and in their general ignorance of science, history, geology. One of my nieces is a fucking RN, and she thinks dinosaurs existed with humans, and she's been taught that science can be interpreted, ya know, like literature. There is one queer young person in the bunch who knew it was safe to come out to me and my spouse. While it breaks my heart that they don't feel safe coming out to anyone else in the family, I'm grateful they knew they were safe with us. 🌈
