My Cage "Classic" 04/20/2008

I love Bernie. I think showing a cute cartoon animal hating on other cute cartoon animals is a good way to show just how stupid prejudices are. Maybe it's just me.

Why do people keep saying that? Turkeys can fly. Those white turkeys fattened up for holiday tables can't but free-range turkeys and wild ones MUST fly or be dinner for foxes or coyotes.

J.E. Melton

In this case it's just a reference to the WKRP episode where they dropped turkeys from a helicopter as a Thanksgiving promo stunt, unaware that turkeys can't fly... Thanks for the awesome buzz-kill tho!

When neoNazis show up for rallies in my city some of them wear "free helicopter ride" shirts. Apparently it's a reference to the fascist 1970s Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet in the 1970s, who killed political dissidents this way. They think it's very funny.

Definitely in 2008 this was true. The year of Obama's election feels like an entirely different age. It's trickier now--it's less straightforward, there are clever denials and recursive reasoning and these grotesque playful bad-faith arguments. I know it's not actually new. It's just new in my lifetime as racism became suddenly public and mainstream again. People I love have fallen for it and we've become estranged over it. This Sartre quote is from 1944. A decade ago it would have felt like a relic from the past. But for the past few years it's been breathtakingly accurate and current: “Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.” This would be difficult to depict within the limits of a comic strip--both word limits and overall tone. But Bernie smirking, being ironic, being evasive, disclaiming his racism while proclaiming hate with a wink would capture the current iteration of American racism--or the TERF thing, which plays out with the same disingenuousness while trans women are murdered. Sorry for the essay. Apparently this really touched a nerve for me. I protested the neo-Nazis marching in my city until my mental health broke and I tapped out. I can't go out anymore--and now it's a full-on street war anyway, and even if I thought that was good strategy it's beyond my capabilities.

Somebody needs to drop him from a helicopter...
