On Heidi Ganahl: Reading about the "justice" system of a few hundred years ago (when the church ran the courts), people would make outrageous claims, like "She went to London and licked the Queen's ass clean." Everyone knew it was bullshit. No on in the entire village had travelled more then 10 miles from where they were born (except the priest, the church was still in the early days of hiding their pedophiles) . The point wasn't whether the accusation was real or bullshit, it was a challenge and everyone took note. Depending on how the accused responded determined how everyone treated them. The truth didn't matter, it was a social status thing. Like when apes fight for primacy and hierarchy. Our brains may have developed beyond other primates, but it just made as more sophisticated at acting like our evolutionary cousins.

I'm 49, grew up in small town Oregon just south of Portland. "Slave for a Day" was the fall fundraiser we did every single year I was in high school. Community members could buy single or groups of kids to do a Saturday of outside chores (nothing inside the home) or kids could buy other kids for a school day. The Saturday stuff had adult chaperones. Nothing weird ever happened that I know of, other than the weirdness of selling kids' labor.
