My Cage "Classics" 11/30 - 12/01/2007

I think the "pineapple head" strip is the first one we didn't put the weird/random bolding of words the syndicate originally had us do. YAY! Originally run Nov 30 - Dec 01 2007.

I believe the syndicate had a formula for how many words we had to bold and when. I'll ask Mel.

Well, bolding works if you need to let the reader know how the conversation sounded to you when you thought of it. For instance, in the "Jeff's side business" strip. the words "side business" didn't really need to be bolded. But in the last panel, bolding "whose" and "need" lets you know exactly the tone of voice being used. If Norm's "personal items" were bolded it would make him sound more sarcastic. And if Jeff's "desk lamp" were bolded, it would kinda change the focus from a random object to a specific one. As another example, in the 11/28/07 strip, in the last panel, even though Rex's word "thinks" is bolded, and Norm's word "she's" is bolded, when I read them, the voice in my head emphasized Rex's "she's" and Norm's "inanimate objects". The point being, that, as long as you're not being forced to randomly emphasize random words, using bold for emphasis is a valid technique to let the reader hear it the way you wrote it. Or at least the way you wanted them to hear it.

The syndicate explained it was to help readers eyes follow the words. I dunno. We noticed we were the only strip doing it though and stopped. :D

My Cage

the bolding of words always seems odd.
