It's a big topic.
A young former work friend of my partner's who was also a beloved babysitter of my little one, has a severe drug problem she relapsed into during lockdown. She's been in and out of a bunch of rehabs--mostly the boyfriend who's pimping her out talks her into leaving so they can stay together.
Her mom is an absolute trooper and I do not know how she's enduring this.
A few years ago I read David Sheff's "Clean" and was horrified by the lack of accessibility, lack of scientific method, and the tiny percentage of positive outcome around substance abuse treatment. Tricky needle to thread, here, trying to depict all that. As long as you don't end with Jeff claiming he's going to go live in Thailand and instead in a subway panhandling with a sign that says he lost his flipper because he's a war vet I think it'll be okay.
