I was for several years a Wiccan with a science degree and used Gould's essay on NOLM as a justification for being able to both 'practice magic' and work as a field biologist. It breaks down in practice - I one day made the mistake of tracking the hits and misses on my 'magic' and discovered that it was no better than 50/50 while also costing money I didn't have (gotta have pretties) and blinding me to the fact that nature don't give a shit about me or you or the desert tortoises in my research area that were getting killed by a respiratory illness. When I stopped believing in the garbage I felt like I was able to see my predicament and that of the tortoises much better, also I was able to save a bit of money by not buying pretties (I still, to this day like my shiny things but not because they are magic).

2021-11-15 21:14:53 +0000 UTCA rare mis-step from Carl, I think. Non Over Lapping Magisteria is not valid. Mostly because religion willfully blocks scientific and therefore human advance all over the place. But even if it didn't, Garbage in = Garbage out too.
